Of course it is technologically possible but I doubt Nintendo would bother with all the implications and just hardwire it into the system.

That's a good point. Just triggering docked mode wouldn't be all that is needed, it would need to leave on the screen/speakers/etc. Screen adds its own heat as well. 

As I mentioned above, I wonder if its even necessary. Small 720p screen seems like it wouldn't need/want it to upscale to docked power mode.
