Forums - Nintendo - Why would devs back another underpowered Nintendo console?

a lot of these devs can scale their games down or port handheld and mobile games

I am 0% convinced skyrim will even appear on the Switch, as far as I could tell it was simply video playing for marketing purposes.

Dark souls? Yeah sure... we'll see about that next month too...

I think both will be on Switch, but really what is the big deal with Skyrim?

It's a 5 year old game, lol, whoopity doo.

Japanese developers I think will actually try reasonably on the Switch though, but for obvious reasons ... Switch figures to be the dominant game platform in Japan, so they have no choice but to take it seriously.

Unlike the DS/3DS as well, Nintendo's never had a portable this close to current generation Japanese games either (even if the specs are underwhelming to some).

seeing the latest leaked specs from digital foundry just makes me even more skeptic, especially on dark souls. This game does not even reach 60 fps on the PS4, imagine how it would run on such a low powered hardware.

Having said this, From Software is probably my favourite developer nowadays with Bloodborne as my game of the generation so far.

Too bad for you, because Bethesda confirmed Skyrim for Switch.

Not sure why it would be bad or good for me. I really have no skin in this one way or the other, just presenting my doubts.

Beacuse you are "0% convinced skyrim will even appear on the Switch".

Also it doesnt make any sense to assume that Skyrim will not appear on Switch, if we already saw Skyrim on Switch, there is no sense at all to show 3rd party game running on Switch if that game actually doesn't come to Switch at all.

you saw a video of skyrim footage on a Switch commercial. you did NOT see skyrim run on a Switch. I'm not saying it won't happen though, I'm saying I'm not convinced yet it will happen. I have an open mind to be proven wrong on this one. Dark souls 3 sounds even more unlikely to me though.

You do realize though that game development is a business right? It's not a country club where developers sit around a table and do whatever they feel like.

If the business suits really want a version of Dark Souls III on Switch ... it's kinda the job of the staff to figure out how to do it. If you work at McDonalds you don't get to not make a Big Mac because you don't feel like it.

Probably a lot of Japanese publishers (and by that I mean the actual business suits running the show) are intrigued by Switch because they want to make money off its potentially large Japanese userbase. On 3DS, yes, it was so far behind that making versions for that required a large business investment to be built from scratch.

But Switch, even if it is underpowered .... does open the door to versions of games. I mean you can take a game run it at 960x540 (1/4th the pixels of 1080p), cut down on some effects, lose the anti-aliasing, but it probably still could look OK on a little 6-inch screen.

Now I mean you're going to have to do some grunt work here to get it run and optimize like crazy, but you're not going to have to build the game up from scratch either (which was the reality on say the Wii vs. PS3/360 or 3DS versus a PS3 or whatever).

Intention of commercial was that show that Skyrim is running on Switch, and they done that even in reality did not run. Again, whats a point of showing 3rd party game runing on new Nintendo console if that game is not 100% coming on that console!? Nintendo definitely wouldn't show 3rd game running on their console if they are not sure that game is coming.

So we have Skyrim at Switch reveal trailer that showing Skyrim running on Switch, we have Bethesda saying that they supporting Switch, and at end we have confirmation from them that Skyrim is coming to Switch, but you are open mind!?

Dark Souls 3 is totally different matter, rumour saying that is running on Switch hardware and that From Software is considering to release it.

All the games in that trailer will be on Switch IMO. Nintendo is too damn cheap to make "mock up" fake games for a commercial video. The only time they really ever do that is the usual "Zelda tech demo" they did for the N64, which then kinda became tradition for the GCN and Wii U.

I remember when they first showed the Wii U and people thought the NSMB game and all the little Metroid mini-game thing and the Wii Sports stuff were just demos, not real games ... but basically all those did get released ... NSMBU, Nintendo Land, and even Wii Sports Club.

It makes no sense what you just said as a counterpoint to my previous statement. Who are the business suits exactly in From Software? Miyazaki decided there will be no more Dark Souls in the coming future, a decision that to most big publishers would be unthinkable as it's From's biggest and most recognizable franchise.

Dark Souls 3 is a game that as good as it is, does not run that great on hardware a generation ahead of this handheld. What you're proposing is that FS will take a game that already struggles on the current gen consoles to mantain good fps pacing and somehow make it run on hardware weaker than the current top tier smartphones (especially on handheld mode). Yeah, good luck with that.

When have third parties ever *not* backed a portable Nintendo console? The Switch is basically guaranteed to get all the support the 3DS and Vita got combined - because where else would developers put games that are better suited for a handheld experience?

It's not strange to you that a few months before the release of the Switch they had no actual footage of the game actually playing on it? Do you really think the game if it actually exists on the Switch will look anything like the bullshots we've seen on the montage?

Again, it's no skin off my back, if it indeed becomes a Switch game, cool. I just remain unconvinced until I can actually see it. I remember FF vs XIII also appearing in PS3 promos and we all know how it ended up right?

So yeah, I've got an open mind on it, I'm ready to be convinced when actual footage of the game comes up, not with mock videos, sorry.
