If it doesn't get third party support it's because people don't buy the system or they don't buy the third party games. PS2 was extremely underpowered for it's generation and one of the most difficult systems to develop for ever, yet it got much more third party support than the more powerful and simple to develop for competiting consoles (Gamecube and Xbox).

I don't agree that PS2 was extremely underpowered because clearly compared to the Gamecube it was superior in many areas but I do agree the issue was about console sales figures and the market size for games. I would suggest apart from the decent marketing the PS2 did well because of its 'playstation' branding, DVD video compatibility and to be honest stylish compact design. It really looked the part. Even the xbox didn't play DVD video without an optional accessory. So maybe the lesson here is the overall package is more important than fine details about performance levels. Perhaps Switch success depends really on how desirable a portable console that also functions as a home console feature is.
For the record;
PS2 advantages over Gamecube.
1. DVD video playback
2. 32bit colour GPU not 24bit
3. Higher resolution 1920x1080i games like Gran Turismo over about 640x480p on Gamecube
4. True 5.1 sound vs 2 channel sound
5. DVD capacity for games 8GB approx vs 1.2GB for GC discs
6. Higher memory bandwidth in some areas
7. 32MB of main memory vs 24MB on Gamecube
8. 4MB of video memory vs 2+1MB on Gamecube
9. A lot of minor support processors that created a steep learning curve for developing but would give additional performance.
10. Greater support for a 60fps frame rate.
Compared to the xbox versions I think there was a lot of missing detail on both Gamecube and PS2. The reason for the gamecube was it simply couldn't store all the data on the disc and had limited main memory size. Some of the bigger games for gamecube actually had much slower load times than even ps2 because they were obviously heavily compressed so they could fit more on the disc and so there was more time for uncompressing.
