Forums - Nintendo - About 3rd party games on Switch

To add context to my previous post (I was asked via PM) without going into too much detail any game that runs on the XB1 or PS4 should run on the NX with little to no issue. What developers choose to or not to port to the console will more than likely depend on consumer support for the thing.

This is Osirisblack, the verified user from neogaf who leaked the PS4 Pro specs. If this is true, that's all I care about.

Note that this was said before the Switch was revealed, so things could have changed.

If it doesn't get third party support it's because people don't buy the system or they don't buy the third party games.
PS2 was extremely underpowered for it's generation and one of the most difficult systems to develop for ever, yet it got much more third party support than the more powerful and simple to develop for competiting consoles (Gamecube and Xbox).

That's what I've been saying, too. Look at the Wii U situation. Proves my point.

I don't agree that PS2 was extremely underpowered because clearly compared to the Gamecube it was superior in many areas but I do agree the issue was about console sales figures and the market size for games. I would suggest apart from the decent marketing the PS2 did well because of its 'playstation' branding, DVD video compatibility and to be honest stylish compact design. It really looked the part. Even the xbox didn't play DVD video without an optional accessory. So maybe the lesson here is the overall package is more important than fine details about performance levels. Perhaps Switch success depends really on how desirable a portable console that also functions as a home console feature is.

For the record;

PS2 advantages over Gamecube.

1. DVD video playback

2. 32bit colour GPU not 24bit

3. Higher resolution 1920x1080i games like Gran Turismo over about 640x480p on Gamecube

4. True 5.1 sound vs 2 channel sound

5. DVD capacity for games 8GB approx vs 1.2GB for GC discs

6. Higher memory bandwidth in some areas

7. 32MB of main memory vs 24MB on Gamecube

8. 4MB of video memory vs 2+1MB on Gamecube

9. A lot of minor support processors that created a steep learning curve for developing but would give additional performance.

10. Greater support for a 60fps frame rate.

Compared to the xbox versions I think there was a lot of missing detail on both Gamecube and PS2. The reason for the gamecube was it simply couldn't store all the data on the disc and had limited main memory size. Some of the bigger games for gamecube actually had much slower load times than even ps2 because they were obviously heavily compressed so they could fit more on the disc and so there was more time for uncompressing.

How many PS2 games had that advantage? Oh... 4 games: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_alternate_display_modes

0 games in the PS2-important PAL-region.

That's promising.

The bigger questions about Switch getting third-party Japanese support are:

Is the Switch region locked?

Will Nintendo ease up on their family friendly views to allow games like Criminal Girls on Switch?

If the answer to even one of these questions is no then its not going to get said support.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Is this important at all for that though? If the game is not released outside Japan that means it gets no localization and is not like a lot of people outside Japan know Japanese.

Many Vita games get an English dubbed version that can only be purchased from Japanese online stores. That way the Japanese developers can avoid localization and other issues dealing with highly sexualized young anime girls.

I don't think that's the kind of japanese support people is excited for at all anyways, specially when talking about a Nintendo machine.

Thats the point. MANY Japanese third-party games are pretty racy by western standards but do have niche followers here. There are even PS4 games like DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball that were never localized here in the west because of the sexualized girls but got English dubbed versions made. Without region lock on the PS4 you can buy the game from a Japanese online store and play it.
