Consoles can't survive on first party titles alone, regardless of who the manufacturer/developer is. Without third party to fill the gaps you end up with big gaps in the release calendar where your userbase grows increasingly impatient.

You may not like to admit it, but it's true, Neither Nintendo, Sony nor Microsoft can be successful on first party alone.

Nintendo released 25 games in 2016 on Wii U and 3DS. Now imagine if they only needed to support one system instead of two. That's quite a lot, isn't it?

25 compared to.. the 112 that had released on ps4 in just the january to may period alone? and the 135 that had released between january and may on xbox one in 2016, too?

the total game counts for ps4/xbo looks set to be above 350 each by the end of the year, too..

Wait, Sony alone released 350 games in one year? Link, please.

I'm talking about Nintendo alone, here. Whatever 3rd party game is thrown in is just a bonus for the Switch.

3rd party games definitely matter, but we'll have to wait and see how much support switch gets.

I am saying companies benefit majorly from third party, you stated the nintendo-only release count as if it was a large enough figure to show they could go it alone, i used all-party numbers to illustrate that the gap between first party only and all-party is less a gap and more a chasm.

It'll get some 3rd party support just probably not from western devs. I pretty much anticipated it being that way anyway, I have PlayStation and Xbox to satisfy my 3rd party needs.

Well okay, but like I said before, most 3rd party games don't sell on a Nintendo console anyway, so the quantity doesn't even matter. Nintendo's audience mainly buys what it likes, and that's mostly Nintendo titles. Or games that have a similar feeling like Layton, Monster Hunter, Yokai Watch, or other gameplay-centric titles.

Nobody buys a Nintendo console for the 3rd party games.

Uh, my decision on whether to get a Switch literally hinges on the support it receives, and it's unlikely that Nintendo alone can support it enough for me to buy it. That is, in practice my decision hinges on third-party support. I'm not interested in Switch for its third-party games, but they're a critical factor anyway.

I don't know. I predict that no matter the initial support.. which will be the same level as 3ds.. the future will depend on the success in sales.
