Forums - Gaming - I Think We're Going To See A lot Of Tablet Consoles (Switch Knock-offs)

Right now the dilenation between devices is good for Sony, because people look at the Playstation and say "well you have to buy that to play Madden and GTA on your TV", but if that thinking starts to shift in consumers, then you have a problem even for Sony. If people start to realize their tablet can now also basically function like a console, it's going to be one less reason to buy a dedicated console.

lol

Good for sony then that it does not function or will anytime soon function as a console.

Depends. If the "take your console games on the go" trend takes off, PS could be losing existing or future PS4 customers to NiN. Worst case scenario, PS just makes an upgraded tablet that has controllers attached and brands it PS because it can play PS4 games on the go. As long as PS is keeping those cutomers happy with hardware, they will keep buying PS games, putting money in their pockets, which is all that matters at the end of the day. Sure it costs money to develop, but PS already does consoles and handhelds and tablets, and keeping customers is quite important if they are buying someone elses product/games instead.

It all comes down to how hot of an item is Switch going to be?

The issue is the competetion wouldn't just be the Switch. You're look at it through the narrow prism of traditional console wars.

The problem is when players like Google and Samsung and maybe even Apple start saying "hey ... this is not a bad idea, lets try it". That's where you get into trouble, because people will then say "oh ok, my iPad already does this, I can play real Madden NFL on my tablet already".

These mobile chips are getting better and better every year, soon enough they will be able to match/exceed a PS4, and sure PS5 will be a good deal better than that, but at what point do you reach a level in graphics where really it's good enough for most people. I think PS4 level is that cut off.

The "big box under the TV" concept of console gaming might start eroding for sure.

These are all reasons why Sony has to prove PS4 can be a replacment for your PC, and PS4 Laptops, Tablets, and Phones need to come as well. Sony has to change the idea of PlayStation from a dedicated gaming platform, to the best gaming first platform. This is what I have been shouting for the last 10+ years.

Nintendo is in the same situation. They have to make Switch a device that can completely replace peoples Console/Tablet/Phone. There is simply no room for a dedicated game device anymore. If XBO and PS4 didn't have web browsers, Netflix, Vudu, PS Vue, Sling, Pandora, PlayStation Music, and so much more, then they would be selling next to WiiU numbers.

Microsoft is already heading in this direction with UWA on XBO. I would not be surprised if the Scorpio actually ends up being called Xbox Surface, or Surface TV (Featuring Xbox). If the traditional gaming scence wants to survive, the concept of console has to change, and Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are trying really hard to help keep gaming alive. It is up to the gaming community to rally behind gaming devices as their one stop shop for all content.

Everytime we use an iPhone, or a tablet, or a streaming box, or smart TV, we are slowly killing the gaming industry. We have the power to stop it, but can gamers grow with the time? By God I hope so. A future where the only quality games made are Madden, Fifa, COD, becuase the rest are forced to go F2P with major downgrades, is not a place I want to live.

Yes. PS is going to have to rely on PSN for the future. Letting you play on whatever hardware you want is going to become the norm way down the road. For now the gaming companies need to give you choices to play on, but as long as you pay for the online service and games, they dont really care how you play the game. Eventually you will probably be able to play on any brand device, as long as you subscribe to the gaming co's online network, and buy the games from them.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

The power of tablets/smartphones doesnt mean anything if developers arent making games that push them or if people arent willing to adapt to $60 releases on them.

Its the same reason why microconsoles like Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, etc. havent been able to build up an audience of traditional gamers.

If these devices dont have the big open world games, first person shooters or annual sports titles than the traditional gaming audience will not migrate to them.

Thats why I said the future. I'm one of those people. My 5mbps dsl rarely exceeds 1mbps due to the network being insufficient for the speed and number of homes on the local hub. The fix for this, is years and years away. Bell tells us basically "your nobody's" and we'll get to you when we get to you, which wont be anytime soon, and its so far away in fact they won't even give you an idea when you could expect a fix or upgrade to the network.

That's why for now its about the hardware, and making sure they have the right hardware, and competitive hardware out there, so that users will purchase it to play their physical software. PS and NiN are both in a very strong position in this sense, because they both have very strong first party support, so you dont necessarily have to like their hardware to purchase it. The more companies that enter the gaming market, and the more first party title games they bring with them, the tougher the harware sell will become, which is when the multiple platforms and online service becomes important.

Thank God for the WiiU selling 130 mil amirite!?

Oh wait...one too many 0's.

You dont need to be a console engineer to know if your idea is gonna be a bad one or a good one. The fact that you couldnt even buy replacements for the WiiU Gamepad was proof enough that the idea was a doomed one.

Hopefully Nintendo will have extras sold separately but I wouldnt be surprised if they dont.

Not sure what Wii U sales & lack of replacement gamepads have to do with Switch........what about the Switch concept don't you like?

Making the tablet portion propietary - they will end up doing it like you would need the WiiU Gamepad for most of the controls in certain games which will of course turn off a lot of devs from making games/ports of their games whether they be late ports or simultaneous releases.

The thing I got pissed off the most with the WiiU (despite hating the controller design)  - is the fact that if your gamepad for whatever reason got damaged or stopped working, your only solution would be to ship it to Nintendo for a replacement or repair - you cant just buy a replacement from the store which irked me a lot. Its like Nintendo themselves didnt have faith in their system, if so, how can you have faith in a successor that will have a somewhat similar controller design?

Edit: Pretaining to other knock-offs - I dont want to see another disaster like the PSMove or Kinect - where they were trying to mimick the motion control success from the Wiimote ~.~.

The tablet idea is oversaturated - motion controls were one thing but the market already has enough tablet type devices for various needs, I wont be surprised if the Switch ends up like the WiiU in that regards.

Its the systems video output though, would obviously have tech inside it which would need to be reverse engineered for there to be 3rd party replacements, would be like saying that Sony and Microsoft should have allowed 3rd parties replace the HDMI port on the ps4/X1 with something else, it's a part of a closed system, and again here, it isn't related to the Switch other than the N branding on the front.

If you mean "I don't trust Nintendo as a company because of the mishandling of the Wii-U" then that's understandable, they handled the system really poorly from conception to it being discontinued, agree with you completely there.

But I am pretty confident in Nintendo making a new start on Consoles with the switch and think they're going to be trying to move on from the Wii-U in as many ways as possible, the delayed launch to insure no software shortages is a great first step as long as they achieve it correctly.

All I can say Basil is have faith in them, they've been around for over 100 years :)
