I would say far more inclined, the general consumer isn't a game collector, they don't care about holding some physical piece of property. Price, ease of purchase and convenience trump all other concerns

Yet they are the ones trading games in and keeping the 2nd hand market in business, while buying the games at large retail stores that advertise them. The average internet connection is also a lot slower than what you would likely find on this site.

No the average consumer isn't doing that at all. Most people buy very few games digitally or otherwise and don't tradein. You have various markets within gaming, there is definitely a sizable section that wait and simply play/tradein old games, I would be shocked though if that amounted to more than 20% of gamers, haven't seen any official figures around that, happy to be pointed at something that says I am wrong though. This site while a poor representation of the average consumer or gamer is likely far better indicator of the average internet connection.

PS: not sure about where you live, but just about every retailer I see has shrunk the gaming section (used and new) as physical instore purchases have been declining for years now.

Physical unless much more expensive or lack of a physical release, such as FAST Racing NEO.

In other cases such as Virtual Console or PlayStation Classics, digital is my preferred option. You can actually support whoever is distributing the game, and the file sizes are usually small for old games.

Movies goes both ways for me. I love Netflix and I've spent money on Google Play, renting movies. Although I prefer a physical copy if it's available at an affordable price.

Music I used to buy physically exclusively, but once I got into college I had to prioritize it over $30 Japanese CDs that I had to import. I usually go digital nowadays, it's cheaper and more convenient for me as I don't have the time or my own car to carry CDs with me. I still buy physical releases of concerts though.

I prefer physical at the end of the day, but digital is a nice alternative.

The Day I cannot buy my main console games physically is the day I stop buying a Playstation or Xbox and just buy everything on PC.

I have always accepted the PC nature of things, physical discs with cd-keys that cannot be traded or lended to frends, generally not playing on the TV and stuff, I accept it.

But for consoles its all about the friends coming over, looking at the display to see which game to play, lending a game every now and then and really having a collection of old games to browse trough and look at the boxes and stuff.

For me physical media is the biggest draw to also owning a console besides my pc.

Twitter @CyberMalistix

All media, games and music in Digital form. I can't really go back to physical since the benefits of it are lost to digital and I have no use for disc when I'm 6ft under.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Digital, being more or less 100% PC gamer for the last 6-7 years, there's no reason for me to buy physical copies any more.

I've always been a fan of physical media. Movies, music, video games. I wanted to own it. Touch it. Have it. Over time, that's changed.

I haven't bought a CD since Michael Jackson died. Haven't purchased a DVD or Blu-ray in a couple of years. And the last physical game I've purchased was Valkyria Chronicles back in May. Some games, I even own physically but went back and purchased digitally because of convenience.

I may have been converted but I'm still open minded. There are many benefits to going digital but there are still benefits to going physical, too. Here's the case for both.

Physical:

+You have something in your hands. You can look at it, display it, and taste it.

+Your game lasts indefinitely, as long take care of it.

+You can resell it when you're done.

+ You can loan it to a friend

+ Rare games can increase in value

+ You don't have to worry about running out of hard drive space.

+ As long as your console works, your game should also work

+ You may be able to refund a crappy game

+ No waiting on lengthy downloads

+ "Collector's Edition" versions are usually exclusive to physical games.

-They can be lost or stolen

-Your friends are assholes who mooch off of you

-they can be damaged

-You have to physically change discs

Digital:

+ No physical storage worries (I have no shelf space anymore)

+ As long as you have an account, your games can't be stolen

+ You can play on two consoles at once with one purchase

+ You can swap games with the press of a button

+ You don't have to worry about losing or damaging a game

+ No waiting in line

+ No shortages

+ No disc drive worries

-You can't loan it to a friend or trade

-You can't resell if it sucks

-If the servers are shut down (see PSP), you can't replace a lost game

-Hard Drive storage may be limited

-Bandwidth may limit your downloads (depending on your plan)

Any pros or cons that I've forgotten? Which side are you on? Are you buy-curious and sometimes buy digital but usual purchase physical? Let's discuss.

One huge point you forget in favor of physical is how much cheaper it is on consoles. After a year on the shelf, most games see huge rebates as stores clear them out. That's not usually the case for digital files.

We already are seeing a lot more digital sales on consoles too for older games. As digital takes more of a share those type of sales will only increase, similiar to Steam where the digital sales are far better than any of the physical media sales in store.

Steam is not Nintendo. And saying "will" is just your wish, or your personal outlook. It's a guess and besides, we're not talking about speculation. We're talking about reality. Physical discs depreciate. Stores rebate heavily.

Xenoblade Chronicles X was $17.89 in my local Target a few months back. Today on E Shop? It's $59.99. Infinite Warefare is $39.99 on Amazon. Today on PSN? $59.99

I think it is more your wish against the inevitable. We saw the same arguments for it happening on PC, then we saw the same thing for Xbox and PS. Now you are raising the same thing for nintendo, history says it is just a matter of time.
