holy hell this is incredible news... I learned a few months ago that no 4K bluray drive = d00m for a game console...
I'm still in shock over this...

Then you should easily be able to stream 4k, no need for a console to do that. And probably you can watch 4k videos off a usb-stick and with dlna which won't work with consoles. |
Can you purchase 4K movies via a digital download then put them on a USB stick to watch them on 4K television? I am curious, but not sure about buying a 4K player just yet.
Thank you for the help.

Most probably not because of DRM. A TV expects the file "as is" and probably digital downloads are not "as is".
Look here for supported types:

| LurkerJ said: Let's take a look at the numbers: PS4 - 143k Xbox One- 93k BF week gap: 50k PS4
But that gap is not nearly as interesting as the following facts: Last year X1 sold 134k during UK BF week, significantly down YOY, in one of its two strongest markets, despite its hyped up 4k blu-ray capabilities and the many great deals. PS4 has destroyed all the ground X1 gained over the last few months on Black Friday: October gap + September gap = 26k X1
It's reasonable to conclude that 4k-bluray isn't a deciding factor for most consumers. Not now, and definitely not when streaming is the indisputable king. |
When Alien is out on 4K BR will talk about how it's a bummer PS4 Pro does not have a player but as of right now I don't care.

That's odd but could be a problem with your TV. |
could be. It is perfectly fine on yt and netflix 4k.
when I looked at the compatibility for mpeg.246 that the tv asked the file had it, but it wouldn't show the file available for reading

You still didn't say which TV you have. Streaming is of course a whole different thing.

Even normal BR aren't setting the world on fire. Nobody wants to buy discs to see movies anymore, they just want to stream or download it.
I see it in a different point of view. Putting a BR drive on the PS3 helped to reach that horrible price point, destroying its chances to compete. Sony noticed that screwing their most important product to help push a media format that pays miserable royalties to a group with dozens of companies wasn't really a good idea.

That is strange - it has Android TV so you should be easily able to install apps on the TV that are able to decode anything you want (if the hardware chips are there and detected).
Samsung and LG support is basically unmatched though in terms of files, containers and codecs.
