Forums - Gaming - Introducing the Potato Masher "Pro" (PC priced at PS4 Pro price)

Do you mind posting the neogaf thread? I got some questions which they might already have the answer to.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

But does it run PS4 exclusives? No? Then it's worthless.

Shamefully...stolen from GAF :p

JermGaming just released an update to his "Potato Masher" video series where he pits a $400 2014 PC vs the PS4. Now, he spends the same amount of money it takes to upgrade to a PS4 Pro (selling his original PS4 in order to recoup funds towards it) on a new GPU for the original Masher.

If you've wanted to see how a PC option around the price of a PS4 Pro stacks up, well here you go. The video goes in depth on benchmarks and commentary on graphics difference accross a number of titles. It's rellly good stuff! If you're undecided this holiday shopping season, or you just want to see what a budget PC can bring to the table vs a new console, this should be enlightening.

Here's the original build before the GPU upgrade

The Potato Masher is a $375 budget PC build from late 2014, designed to compete with the PS4 for the rest of its lifecycle. The Potato Masher Pro is a side-series where I drop in a new GPU and compare it against the Playstation 4 Pro.

Here are its specs:
i5 750 overclocked to 3.7 ghz
Asus P7H55 LGA 1156 motherboard
8GB DDR3 memory
Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB G1 Gaming
320GB Samsung Spinpoint HDD
Cooler Master Wavemaster Case
Arctic Alpine 11 GT cpu cooler
EVGA 430 watt PSU
Logitech KB+M combo
Windows 10 64-bit

I cant wait to build my PC next year especially after watching this video though the hardware I'm looking for is just more than for gaming and would be way more powerful than this :p.

Does it include a controller? Do you have to pay for online multiplayer? Does it have Bloodborne? Do I have to sit 20 cm away from the screen? Can I resell my games? Am I able to play games from 2006 on this machine?

Weird comparison.

If this is in reference to me building a PC next year......

It doesnt include a controller because I already have 4 controllers for PC games
-Dualshock 4
-Xbox360 controller
-Gaming desktop Mouse and Keyboard
-Extra Keyboard and Extra Mouse

I dont have to pay online unless I wanna no life in MMO games ;o!

No, but it does have three similar games :p

I dont know if you need to sit 20 cm, you should ask that yourself :O

If you bought physical copies yes. You can sell extra keys or trade them for other games if you have gotten extra keys from bundles.

Even a 2016 toaster can play a 2006 game.

It had nothing to do with you.

started the video. he is comparing them at 1080p resolutions, and not including HDR? completely redundant comparison.

Fine toaster for its price, but a non DDR4 capable cpu will make it age poorly compared to the ps4 pro IMO.

What does DDR4 have to do with it, the ps4 pro and the pc both use DDR3 sure, but they both have GDDR5 memory to run games..... on the pc it isn't shared and the pc has more GDDR5 memory then the ps4 has total memory available for games (5.5GB vs 6GB) so the DDR3 in the pc, which can be used for caching and is significantly faster then HDD caching, will just improve the quality of gaming, not decrease it.

The PC won't use GDDR5 as system memory, and don't forget to account for windows using more memory than PS4 OS. It's also about the system being enough until the end of PS4Pro lifetime, accounting for ps4 version being optimized better and PC games that will be developped with High end rigs in mind. I don't expect PC games 4 years from now to be build around ddr3 low frequency.
