Forums - Politics - China: No More iPhone Sales, Imports, Threatens Trade War Vs. Trump

(a)This seems irrelevant. (b) Trump has shown no interest in an aggressive foreign policy.

When he starts carrying on like the Bushes and Clintons I'll worry, but from what I've seen he will make trade deals that favour the US and will only use the military to defend the US should some other country chuck a tantrum and attack. Which seems unlikely.

Who knows though....power corrupts and Trump may become corrupted just like anyone else.

(a) Its very relevant, it shows that the US economy is largely built on a house of cards. It shows that if pushed in a corner China could cause signficant economic damage to the US. Why do you think your Government is so obssessed with Syria? Its over the Iran->Syria piples. They know what you dont, without the petrodollar the US gets f#@ked. They need Assad out of the way so that your "ally" Qatar can sell gas and petroleum to the EU:  not only to spite/weaken Russia but primarily to maintain your hegemony. Warfare is fought on many fronts and the economy is one of the biggest ones.

As far as this thread is concerned any war between America and China would ensure mutual destruction, any victory would be phyrric. The cost is simply too high.

(b and c) Have you seen the people Trump is surrounding himself with? Do you expect any restraint or tact from Trumps team if China/Russia/Anyone plays hardball in response to Trumps carelesss rhetoric/threats? Do you really think they'll be "level headed"? I genuinely think ISIS is working overtime to attack the US as we speak because they know how Trump will respond, and it will be a huge recruiting drive.

My government? I'm Australian. I'm looking at this from the outside and have seen Trump as more of an isolationist than an aggressor. He wants to frack oil from under the US so that they don't have to trade with or invade the middle east.

I agree that warfare is fought on economic fronts, but with all the major players nuclear armed, I think everyone wants to avoid hot wars. Nobody wants to vaporise the human race. I think team Trump can be level-headed enough to avoid that. Like I said at the end though: power affects people strangely and Trump could be no exception.

My bad, sorry about that. I wish I could be as optimistic as you are. I feel Donald is isolationist, but the establishment Republican party is not. I dont trust the people Trump is surrounding himself with. They are typical, trigger-happy neocons who will jump at the opportunity to start shit ecspecially in the Middle East.

heh, funny thread is funny.

It seems some people think this is like a video game or something where Trump saying something mean about China will make them hit the `declare war` button

Clearly you're uneducated to know how stubborn China is.

It's not the establishment republican party who's running the executive branch of the government, it's Trump which get final say in pretty much everything he's responsible with and his cabinet members ...

While Trump could be surrounding himself with neocons, the days of running like the Bush's are over when the party base is rapidly evolving from neoconservativsm to paleoconservatism to reflect that change in leadership and Trump can resign ANY of his cabinet members at ANY time so they are almost certainly beholden to his interests ...

Just as Tibet, whom they've rear-ended constantly.

The presumptions, assumptions and flat out misinformation in this thread is...well, we did elect Trump.

You realize that's ~10% of the US's debt. Hardly enough to bring the US to its knees.

So uh, how do we plan to just cough up $1.2 trillion if it were called in?  If your creditor called in 1/3rd of your annual salary at once with no savings, that would bring you to your knees.

That's not how it works. The US didn't give China an IOU and a wink. Much like several other countries, China has begun to sell some of their bonds. Usually done for stimulus and the prop up their currency. Demand is still there for treasury bonds because they're the most stable investment in the world.

Also, for the last time there is no "Call in their debt". USA would never agree to that. Think about it, would you make a deal with your bank regarding your mortgage that allows the bank to demand you to pay what you owe for the house all of a sudden? Of course not. As long as we pay their interest we are fine.

True, but how much of that $1.2 trillion (it was $1.3 trillion last year so they've cashed in some as you noted) has matured?  How much could they potentially call in at once?  Better stated, how much would we need to borrow to cover?   Further stated, we're basically at a point where we'd have to rob Peter to pay Paul if China were to cash in.

You and I both know China won't because harm to us is harm to them but my comment was more in reference to just how much damage 10% would really do....if they could call it all in at once (I really am curious what the maturaity rates and percentages are for the T-bills they have).

We don't know that information, but I'd be shocked if they'd be able to claim them all at once. That would defy logic on both sides.

To humor the thought, the US would suffer a setback, but it wouldn't cripple the country.
