Forums - Gaming - Good games that still got slammed by fans.

I've been thinking a lot lately about games that were technically good, but still got slammed by fans because they weren't exactly what they wanted.  Final Fantasy X-2 and Metroid: Other M come to mind for me.  X-2 was technically a good game, but it still got slammed by fans because of the whole "Magical Girl" theme and cheesy story.  Yuna went from being a nun in the first game to a scantily clad pop princess in the second, and fans weren't too thrilled.

And say what you will about Metroid: Other M, but I thought the gameplay was solid enough.  But still, fans hated the fact that it wasn't the more traditional Metroid experience of exploration and discovery.  Instead, Other M was more of an arcadey action game,  and while the gameplay was fun, it was admittedly shallow.  Fans weren't happy with the end result.  I also think people generally just hated the story, and how weak and vulnerable Samus came across in the game.

Can you guys think of any others?  You can post whatever views you like as well.  You can take the side of the game or the side of the fans.  Was the hate justified or not?  Your call.

Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts- I definitely get why fans who wanted a platform game were upset, but the game was actually really good. Great use of user generated content.

Super Mario Sunshine- This one has gone full circle to the point where now it's actually probably a bit overrated. At the time it was released, it was disliked because it wasn't as revolutionary as Mario 64 but it was still one of the better platform games.

Skyward Sword- This is just kind of the thing with Zelda games. Game gets hyped beyond belief, then people complain about it, then when the next one comes out, they love it. When Breath of the Wild comes out people will start loving Skyward Sword.

Kirby's Epic Yarn- Just a nice pleasant game. Another case where people complained because it wasn't like other games in the series, but we got a traditional game like a year later.

You made this thread because of Color Splash, just admit it.

Fallout 4, the game is fantastic but a lot of fans don't think the same.

Fallout 4 comes to mine. Alot of the Fallout fanbase didn't seem to like it, but I loved it personally.

The same comment at the same time, bravo!

Honestly, don't hate these games cause you don't have friends to play with or not know how to have fun with others.

(If you're having trouble enjoying these games with others then add some alcohol to the mix, I swear sht gets crazy!)

Uh, I can't think of any. If there's any, I haven't played them.

X-2 was horrible. Gameplay was pretty good, but all the main characters were extremely annoying. It was especially obvious with Yuna, who acted like a responsible adult in X, and then regressed to the level of a teenager in X-2. The characters and the ridiculous story ruined the whole game for me. I wouldn't even have minded the stupid setting that much if it weren't for the characters and the story. X-2 is basically a prime example of what to not do when creating a sequel to an excellent game (or any game, for that matter). I think I didn't even want to be reminded of the existence of X-2... I could probably write a lot more about that game but it's probably better I don't write a huge rant.

I wouldn't say 3DWorld was a hated game. My vote goes for Starfox: Zero. I liked it.

"Good" is always a bit subjective, though.
