Looking at the stats for NA: - the xbox sold 16m, and I'd guess "nearly all of them" have upgraded? - ditto the GC? If both those groups upgraded, then that's 28/9m "consoles", add in new Wii users, and there's a huge market for an immediate upgrade, without even including PS2 owners? I'd guess multiple console owners muddy the water, along with people who bought a GC/XB and then converted to PS2... |
Well, I for one have a GC and a PS2 from last gen. This generation I decided to get Wii and Xbox 360. I know I'm a multi console user, but I stick to two consoles a generation. And I stayed with Nintendo for one, and for my second one went with the Xbox this time.

I have to disagree with the idea that PS2 sales are a win for Sony. Their goal is to get Blu-ray into living rooms and build a new power base around the PS3. They surely don't mind the revenue the PS2 continues to produce, I won't debate that, but the PS3 is the future of their games division and they want it to be the big boy on the block not the PS2.
More to the point this idea that brand loyalty will suddenly kick in and dump PS2 owners by the truckload into the PS3 camp falls flat on its face when you simply look back at past generations. Nintendo would love it if brand loyalty was a major factor in a console purchase, but if you look back at the PS1 VS N64 (to cite one example) you will see it didn't help them much then. If it had, there might not even be a Sony Gaming Division today.
The PS2 will likely keep selling until major stores begin removing software to make room for current gen software. At that point its exposure drops considerably and sales will decline from there. To a certain extent this is a good thing for Sony as it will mean they can focus on building a PS3 empire.
How many of these sales are just to replace broken consoles? I've bought the PS2 4 times! It can't be as active as people say it is, because the software sales just aren't there.
Tease.
a lot of people stay a console generation behind so u can get cheap console and lots of cheap games.
The PS2 has a great back catalog of really good games(that are pretty much cheap/reasonably priced) and the system itself is priced very low. Of course, sales are still going to be going strong.
Last gen. I was a PS2 (and for a little bit Dreamcast) owner and early last year I bought a 360 and shortly after that I bought a Wii. I have no plans at the moment to get a PS3, though maybe sometime in the future if its cheap and has games I want (full BC would be nice too)

Still play my PS2
I have PS3 but that one is just for bluray movies for now
If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing

I still play my ps2 sometimes......... but too few titles are coming out for it, probably because Sony wants the Ps3 as their next big thing.

I've always wondered that myself. I'm on my fourth PS2 as well

What's up with these people who've bought 4 PS2s? I bought mine used (an old, dusty "fat" PS2) over two years ago, and it's got pretty constant use. Maybe I just got lucky and managed to snag one of the later revisions?
"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."
