Forums - Nintendo - So Paper Mario Color Splash is a huge flop

Given that Nintendo dropped the Wii U like a rock, it is only natural. When the manufacturer loses faith in a product, don't expect customers to stick around.

I heard good things about the game. So, i can only assume its the Wii U thing and probably the bad reception to the previous title in the series.

Sticker Star did have reasons aswell, the issue is that the stuff you get from battles can be obtained by other means. It's the same deal in Color Splash, hammer points are essentially just more paint which is already plentiful in the field. You can beat the game without picking up a single hammer point, so for the sake of time and resources you're still better off avoiding battles (well that, and because this is by far the worst battle system I have ever seen in a videogame, but I digress).

Combat system is not really good, and the game would be much better with the traditional Papwr Mario battle system, that's for sure. Still, I ran into some mandatory battles in Color Splash which almost totally drained all my paint. So I think that battling in this game is actually necessary. SS felt more like a waste of resources.

I can assure you though, that the writing, humour and level design of Color Splash is actually very good, and way, way better than SS. It's a damn shame I still dislike the combat system, even if they tried to fix it a bit. It would be a 9/10 game easily, not a 7.5/10 imho.

Admittedly I only heard that people have beaten it without hammer points, I haven't seen it for myself, but I bet it's doable. If trying to do so makes the game a challenge then that would actually be the first resemblence to real Paper Mario with how you could make the games harder in a variety of ways. That's not nearly enough though!

Oh sure, but I don't but don't buy games to read them, I buy games to play them.

Fight the regular enemies in PM64, TTYD and SPM was also pointless. Only bossfights were interesting in some way. Same for Color Splash.

Technically you can play the game without doing overworld battles, as I've heard a reviewer say that, but I've had many moments where I'd run low on ink, even with the extra ink I earn from battles (as well as cards), so I would say it would be possible to struggle a bit if you don't battle at all. Perhaps if you just use weak and simple cards to battle, you'd get by, but then you're not really using more interesting cards and just end up having very dull battles. Plus, not battling would sort of make the game a bit dull to play. And battling feels more involving than most other RPGs do in CS, like Super Mario RPG.

Strange that you say that when battles are the dullest part of the game, even those supporting this game have to admit that. Even more shocking is that you say a barebones neverchanging battle system is more engaging than others which have the basic RPG 101 down that give them depth on top of their own unique gameplay features. SMRPG among most others actually has progression and variety with new party members, new gear, new moves (that actually do a variety of different things), new abilities, improveable stats, and so ons. The lack of even the most basic mechanics only makes me not want to get involved with CS.

Paper Mario Color Splash is a good game, its fun and entertaining.

Definitely not, especially not in the first two games. How are you supposed to confront the bosses if you don't upgrade your characters? And I think it's plain obvious why bosses are more interesting than standard enemies.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Pointless in terms of "Not this shit again", many regular enemies in whole PM franchise are plain annoying.

In any PM entry (including Color Splash) I fought around 50% of enemies to upgrade my HP, FP, Paint Hummer, etc. And in many cases I avoided regular enemies fights whenever it was possible.

What do you mean, aren't good enemies supposed to be annoying? What about enemies in other RPGs?

Same. Grind for the sake of grind.

Then why are you playing these games!? xD

Also my definition of grinding is when you halt story/level progress to gain experience/resources not from the beaten path, so by that meaning you don't have to grind at all in Paper Mario games.
