I suppose Microsoft's business strategy of "if we set enough mountains of money on fire, surely we'll win something" is finally paying off :P

Speaking of money, Microsoft really needs to do something with its 1st (and 2nd) party efforts. Halo 5 and Gears 4 have sold way less than their predecessors and these are the company's tentpole franchises. Fable Legends was cancelled along with Lionhead Studios being closed down. Quantum Break and ReCore didn't sell that well. The former's budget, especially, must've been pretty big considering the production quality and live action scenes.
Not saying it's all doom and gloom. The Forza IP has proven to be the rock for Microsoft, but the company really needs to step up overall.

Well this was the major problem that Xbox had that no one saw early on because they were distracted by Microsoft showing its ass to the world in early 2013: they had allowed their first and second party offerings to decay considerably during the latter years of the seventh generation. Whereas Sony an even Nintendo went out with a bang with Sony bringing The Last of Us and Nintendo bringing Xenoblade, Last Story, and Skyward Sword, Microsoft just kinda let coasted. They became notorious for talking on and on about Hulu and Netflix and focusing on multimedia functions while they put Gears on ice with no suitable replacement set up, let Halo's quality start to sag, put out no new IPs of any note whatsoever, and Forza got less and less push with every entry. But what really pushed this from problem to crisis was the Master Chief Collection, which became a huge joke. Basically, Sony came into this gen prepared with their first party studios and franchises ready to work. Microsoft stumbled in with CoD Ghosts as their "big show piece" and have been scrambling to piece their first party empire back together ever since.

It goes back even further really. Even of their top three franchises, only Forza was originally created by a MS first party, Gears and Halo were bought.
They have struggled tremendously with new IP since the first Xbox. Forza and Kinect crap is all they have made internally that have seen success. Don't see it changing anytime soon either in terms of their first party.

Yep, I remember the multiplayer issues surrounding the MCC and that really did a number on 343i's reputation in handling the Halo franchise. The Halo 5 campaign turned out to be underwhelming. There were trailers that hyped up the supposed showdown between Master Chief and Locke, but in reality, they engaged in fisticuffs for like 20 seconds, lol.
I felt that the Gears franchise was handled better. The Gears Ultimate Edition was not botched and Gears 4 had a better campaign than Halo 5, so it was a bit surprising to still see a big drop from Gears 1, 2, and 3. Heck, it's performing almost as bad as Judgement which was not a good game. The drop could be attributed to franchise fatigue. I remember that the reception of Gears 4's gameplay footage was lukewarm. Personally, I complained a lot about the in-game dialogue which sounded very off.
I kinda disagree with Sony coming into this gen prepared. There have been so many delays that it's a bit infuriating. Of course, some of Sony's delays benefitted its games, but it would be nice if a game will release in, for instance, March 20, 2017, it actually comes out in March 20, 2017.
Sony not bundling Battlefield1 with ps4 makes no sense for sales. Its hotter then COD this year and will have better legs do the better quality and reviews and replay value from MP

The issue with Gears is a lack of any media presence from 3 to 4. Like, at all. Gears was more or less pressumed dead by the time the One launched so 4 was more a revival of the franchise in many people's eyes with new devs, not Cliffy B and crew. I mean, so many other shooters had grown big in the intervening years, just bringing Gears back with modest promotion was never going to print money.
And I didn't say Sony's development pipeline was perfect but they came in with people anticipating new entries in standing franchises and new franchises from day one. Last of Us in particular was a major boost in that regard as it really focused people's attentions on Naugty Dog and Playstation's first party offerings. This is all more a matter of positioning and perparation. Sony was miles ahead of Microsoft in that regard.
