As much as I shit on Gamefreak, that's clearly not true. The production values on the last two generations of Pokemon vastly surpass the generations before, so I have no doubt they will rise to the task. Plus, top down is just a perspective. Pokemon literally just needs to add a controllable camera for most of the AAA work to be done. They can just use the Pokemon models they already have for the overworld at that point since they are already of such a high quality. They'd really just need to upgrade the character models one more time to more closely match the sugimori art, and the rest is just overworld stuff.
I'd say that they also need to put in voice acting, but if that's in your metric for "games we're imagining," then all Nintendo platforms have sucked, because Nintendo consistently fails at conforming to that standard in all but a scarce few cases.
The exclusive games will be fine. Everything else, though? It's looking rough, and if you like platform that won't loose strong first party support after two years like the Wii U did, that should terrify you.
