I can't believe that in 2016 we still can't use external HDD

This is ridiculous

This has nothung to do with the year or the hardware, its obviously a decision Sony has chosen to make.

I think this has to do with piracy. I really can't think of any other reason why they don't allow the use of an external HDD.

wut, an external hdd it's just a hard drive, nothing different about the security

Yes you can transfer data from one to the other.

Ok sony needs to get  their external HDD shit together.

Right now I'm buying  a 500GB SSD for $150+ for the Pro. Meaning im going down from 1TB (that I had in my OG PS4) for improved performance and because I can't justify spending $250+ for a 1TB SSD.

if sony does this I can just plug in my 4TB external drive to my PS4pro and have that act as a library of sorts and only have games I'm currently playing on the internal drive.

Which would be faster theoretically: an external drive or real SATA 3 speeds from a HDD?

Technically speaking, if both drives are SATA 3, and both connectors supporr SATA 3 speeds (so at least USB 3 and a SATA 3 HDD interface) then the internal drive will be faster.

The reason the external drive is faster for the XB1 is because its internal drive uses a SATA 2 connector while the external drives connect via USB 3 (which has a higher bandwidth than SATA 2).

There is, as it stands all PlayStation games can only run from the encrypted internal drive or a bluray disc. Obviously sony has more control over that than whatever they could have over an external drive.

Only way I see them being comfortable with this is if they require that the external drives are formatted in a such a way thathey won't just only work with a PS4 but also only the PS4 that did the encryption. Or some shit like that.

I'd be totally okay with that!

But this would have been a really awesome feature tho,  with this I could settle for a 256GB internal SSD and then a 4TB USB drive and if possible just move the games I am currently playing onto the internal drive. Copying over USB 3 will be faster than redownloading stuff.

But now I have to use a 512GB SSD for my pro (cause I can't justify buying a 1TB SSD for it).

on the XB1, if using an external HDD is it possible to move data between it and the internal drive or the XB1 just sees it all as one drive?

You can view things in multiple ways.

-Everything (all as one drive)

-internal only

-usb/external only

And you can move content back and forth whenever you want, as much as you want. Even when you're actually playing the game you want to transfer.

*Just looked at it* Apparently, they made a change since the last update. All I see is

"Internal: 90.5 GB of 364.9 GB Games & Apps" 75.1% used"

"External 1: 846 GB Free of 1.8 TV Games & Apps" 53.5% used"

In my game library, it says: "57.1% Used. All storage: 955.1 GB free"

--since it says "External 1", it makes me wonder, could I connect multiple USBs (External 2?)? Hmm...

from the Xbox help page "Additionally, no more than three external drives can be connected to the console at the same time."

Also, support up to 16TB combined.

Well, there's only 3 USB ports so that makes sense. Still, HOLY BALLS!

I think we should start asking for this feature in force. It does seem that Sony actually listens to what we ask for when it comes to updates (except name change of course) so if we start asking now maybe we get it by the next major update. Which should be sometime at or around E3 2017.

sigh.....

That's what I am saying from the start of this generation =p. My 500GB PS4 was full in less than two months, Sony can start a partnership for external HD's and make a nice buck on it aswell but I guess they prefer Yen.

Anyway let me end on a interesting side note. If you download every PS one game and put it on a HD...It would fit on a PS4 500GB HD.

I've actually been there years ago. I forgot it existed! Yeah, I'll go there. I'm sure somebody else has already made the case, though.

*Edit* I clicked the link. Now, I'm more discouraged than ever. :(
