Allowing MS to become better at supporting Sony's own format; that's a pretty good plan. I wonder what it would cost them to make it 4K capable (as in discs), and I wonder if Sony, with stakes in the movie industry and as a TV maker with some cutting edge 4K sets, understand the huge level of difference between streaming and physical 4K content.
Needless to say; I disagree with Pachter. I for one would change my old PS4 into a Pro on day one if it had 4K disc playback, and I can't be the only one. There's really no reason not to include it, they're potentially also losing money on selling films on disc, not to mention handing over the business to the streaming titans of the industry, netting themselves less actual influence in the process.
Yes, physical sales are declining, and yes there are very few 4K discs being sold, but this is also on account of the incredibly small number of viable, proper 4K players.
Of course it doesn't matter. I cant even remember when last i saw a physical disc, be it dvd or bluray. And the casuals that want to watch movies, simply dont care about buying discs when they have netflix/amazon/apple store/play store.....etc. There is just no need.
This whole movies on discs nonsense has bevome relevamt or such a big deal now cause its one thing a certain group of people can say their console has and that the other doesn't.... when in truth even those people saying it will probably not buy up to 5 UHD movie discs over the course of the next 5yrs.
When BR discs for movies were important, back in 2006/2007/2008 during the HD format war, sony won it. And what difference did it make for the PS3? The non Blu-ray playing 360 still kicked it's ass for the majority of the generation. But all of a sudden it matters now lol.
oh and this too....

Well it matters to some people. I don't buy his argument. This product is aimed at people who value visual quality, why should they be satisfied with streaming, which is absolutely lackcluster in both visual and audio quality. People who are satisfied with downgraded visuals of movies or games would probably buy the slim.

Yes :)
His opinion is backed with solid numbers, and I agree with him.

And there are very few UHD bluray movies available out there. I mean the technology just came out this year

100% what I'm thinking as well. There is no good reason for it not to support 4K discs, the total added cost would be more than neglectable, Sony are both co-owners of the format itself as well heavy on contacts and suppliers for parts and assembly on anything and everything blu-ray related. It sounds like the feeble excuses that were used last gen when Nintendo chose to region lock their consoles, they did because they did it, more or less, the reasoning behind was nonsense. Sony, a tech and hi-fi company with a long history of formats, film and movie distribution, always at the forefront of tech when it comes to visual and audiovisual technology, have left out the best version of their own format where they distribute their own films on their own platform. It makes no sense what so ever, even if the pool of potential consumers who would buy for 4K discs is small, which I'm not so sure that it is. Getting a kick-ass console with upscaled 4K gaming and proper 4K movies on disc could be just what the doctor ordered and it certainly wouldn't detract from the appeal of the Pro at any rate.

And the discs cost more than normal blu-ray or dvd's.... Theres a reason the sales of UHD Blu-rays are selling so slowly, its just too expensive for what you get from it.
