Allowing MS to become better at supporting Sony's own format; that's a pretty good plan. I wonder what it would cost them to make it 4K capable (as in discs), and I wonder if Sony, with stakes in the movie industry and as a TV maker with some cutting edge 4K sets, understand the huge level of difference between streaming and physical 4K content.
Needless to say; I disagree with Pachter. I for one would change my old PS4 into a Pro on day one if it had 4K disc playback, and I can't be the only one. There's really no reason not to include it, they're potentially also losing money on selling films on disc, not to mention handing over the business to the streaming titans of the industry, netting themselves less actual influence in the process.
Yes, physical sales are declining, and yes there are very few 4K discs being sold, but this is also on account of the incredibly small number of viable, proper 4K players.
