Forums - Gaming - Nintendo president essentially confirms Switch is a handheld

You saw the commercial right? It shows what the Switch does. The hook is in the name. Everyone knows what it is. We don't know battery life or library or resolution but we know what the system does. Why would labeling it "console" or "handheld" change anything? If I called Switch a "baked potato" would it suddenly gain or lose third-party support? Would it miraculously grow a second screen? Does a great game running in the dock turn to crap once undocked?

Problems:

We don't know battery life. (and from rumors, so far, it will be mediocre and below).

We don't know exact specs (got only rumors).

The concept is perfectly clear. Something that is supposed to do both things. The problem lies in communicating everything that is NOT the concept - and I am thinking that this is a part of a bigger problem in functional (read: target market, specifications, support) communication.

Nintendo fans are perfectly excited about it - don't see why they wouldn't be. But all of this, including the iffy statements from western third parties so far is bad for system hype, word of mouth, etc. Nintendo needs to rectify that.

Sony communicated the PS4 at reveal time perfectly. Hype built up, turned to preorders, and look where it is now. This is less "what we call it" and more "clear message". Look at the bigger picture.

So if the concept is perfectly clear -- that it's a portable console -- why oh why do need to label it "console" or "handheld"?

The answer is: we don't. It's an argument in semantics. That was my point. It has nothing to do with Nintendo PR. It has everything to do with people labeling it a portable because they believe portables are inferior.

I need to because it establishes my argument that Nintendo is not done making dedicated home consoles. This is especially important because it seems nobody believe Nintendo will make another home console and are using this console as a lable for their new home console. A label is more than a label here for me.

Even the host of my show thinks Nintendo is done making home consoles because this console is, in his opinion, Nintendo's way of migrating away from dedicated home consoles. I disagree because I do not see this as a home console in any way, shape, or form. The label is important.

It is in Nintendo's best interest to call this a portable home console because it sounds far more market sexy than, "a hand held that can connect to your television"

I simply disagree. This is most definitely a 3DS successor. If this is a home console, where is the home console portion? There is a glorified video out case, but the honest reality is that this is a hand held that can be hooked to a television. Fuck the fact that it uses moile technology torun the console.

There is nothing wrong with this since I believe Nintendo is really going somewhere with their next home console. When Nintendo released DS, they said they were not killing off Game Boy and that DS was not the Game Boy replacement; rather, it was the third pillar. But, who were they fooling? Only the most dedicate sheep were fooled into believing that lie and now only that same equivalent would be fooled here. The DS line did replace the Game Boy line and I believe this line will replace the DS line.

You're going to be very disappointed lmfao.

It is a portable, if some Nintendo console apologists want to be upset with people calling it that, honestly that's their problem.

LOGICALLY to be honest the Nintendo home console being "absorbed" into their much more successful portable division makes a lot of sense.

Nintendo portables have outsold Nintendo consoles wall to wall for *20* straight years. This isn't like some minor trend. The Wii U is Nintendo's worst selling console.

With mobile tech improving, the writing was on the wall. If it's so widely accepted that Sony has no future in the portable game business due to Vita's "failure" why is Nintendo's future in the traditional home console market assured? The Wii U sold even worse than the Vita.

If Sony made this exact same system, I would call it the same thing. Or if Sony suddenly released a "TV out" dock for the Vita and bundled it with the Vita, is the Vita suddenly a home console? No. It's a bonus side feature made possible by the HDMI connection.

Lol. You did not even attempt to dispute my facts. Nor did you answer my question. How do you work for this site? And I remember predicting Wii U before ANYONE! People said I was stupid, wrong, or would be disappointed. I was none of those things.

Doesnt this go against what Nintendo has already said? I think the statement above is possibly being read into too much.

I think hole point of Switch is to be "jack of all trades, but master of none" at price of a just home console. With good price, good marketing and good launch lineup, can be very attractive for both home console and handheld lovers, not to mention that will certainly be interesting for some casuals also.

Lets be honest the main buyers for this thing are going to be 3DS owners. This isn't going to compete with a PS4/XB1, with the revelation of no HDD today, it likely cannot even run a lot of the big AAA home console games as some of those games are the size of an entire 128GB SD Card.

My "U" has a two terabyte hd.  so unless it has zero usb, the switch I'm sure could run at least that.  storage is a non issue.

Switch has USB but no external HDDs or storage are supported.

Has to be inside the main unit, which means SD Card storage only. Which means realistically you're going to be looking at 256GB max for the NS probably.

That's per LPVG which has gotten basically every leak about the NS correct, so there's little reason to doubt them.

The main practical reason for this is there would be big problems/probably even freezing of the console if you "Switch"-ed from home to portable mode while the system was accessing from an external HDD.

I think I misunderstood your original comment, which was directed at game card size?  I believe tech can cover that hurdle or else they wouldn't be doing this.  but on the storage side, I don't see that as an issue either.  time will tell.  either way, I can't wait to try it out.

I seriously can't believe this thread has gone on for over 100 posts.

You know what, call it a portable if you want. I'm going to call it a night.
