Forums - Nintendo - Switch Prediction: Switch will have Pro version that includes dock with extra processing power

I'm not sure you realize how big of a leap it is to go from 720p to 1080p. 1080p has 2.25 times as many pixels as 720p. It requires a considerable amount of extra power, and would probably cost more than Nintendo wants.

 I was just assuming a minor boost in power and then upscaling that to 1080p.  If the games already have high-quality assets, wouldn't that make the games look significantly better by default?  I wasn't talking about making a game run natively in 720 P to make it run natively in 1080 P. I admit I'm not familiar with the tech side of this stuff, but I definitely wasn't talking about what you're talking about.

In that case it's probably not worth the extra cost, if I had to guess. Upscaling is already half-free as far as I know, and even TVs can do it in its basic form. It just doesn't look much better than the native resolution. In case you want a better upscaler in the dock though, that's probably affordable. I don't really how much hardware upscalers cost (in case they're actually a thing like I think), but they ought to be much simpler and cheaper than adding any actual processing power in the dock. Still, upscaling has traditionally been mostly useless for increasing quality. The checkerboard upscaling used by PS4 Pro seems promising, and there's probably other more advanced techniques as well, but I wouldn't count on them. There's probably some reason we haven't seen too much of them in gaming just yet.

Oh yeah, there's also the issue of connecting the extra processing power to the tablet if that's what you want to do after all. I must admit I don't know the details very well, but I imagine it's not the simplest thing to do in the first place, and someone suggested it would require restarting the tablet... It's probably quite difficult to make it happen without requiring a reboot, because messing with hardware during runtime isn't easy. It's probably doable somehow, but I don't know if there's even any existing solutions for that. If there's anyone that knows more about these things reading this, I'd like some more information on this myself, please!

Around the Network

Well Ninty has yet to mention the SCD that we all saw patents for earlier this year. The doc does have two USB ports on it (Maybe 3.0+) an SCD could be attached to one and an external HDD could possibly be purchased and attached to the other.

This could be something they reveal early next year to attract the "Core" gamer's that are driven by specs and also land them even more 3rd party support. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Albion - Its Fun as Ballz !!!!!

Given how we have the New 3DS, along with the Pro and Scorpio on the horizon.
I can very easily see this happening.
Hell, Nintendo made the concept of upgrading hardware a common theme, for better or worse.
Game Boy -> Game Boy Color
Nintendo DS -> Nintendo DSi
3DS -> New 3DS
They've been doing it looong before Microsoft and Sony have.
