Forums - Gaming - PlayStation VR - Making it a Non-Novelty.

So far so good that VR (namely PS VR) is off to a good start.  Of course it's still up in the air whether or not VR is a fad.  I wouldn't call it an evolution to gaming, but I would say that VR can be another viable option.   But I find it rather ironic when I read this from John Carmack:

"We are coasting on novelty, and the initial wonder of being something people have never seen before," said Carmack. "But we need to start judging ourselves. Not on a curve, but in an absolute sense. Can you do something in VR that has the same value, or more value, than what these other [non-VR] things have done?"

I find it ironic because Carmack is the creator of DOOM, and I've always felt that the best way to push VR is through the first person genre such as shooters which Carmack was arguably the father of.  And this is coming from a non-fps fan.  You'd think as popular as fps have been in the past, having a steady stream of fps VR titles would keep VR as one of the primary options for gaming.  And Carmack is a smart man, but if we can sit in front of our televisions and enjoy a game, what's to stop VR from making it a more immersive expereicne?

So is this the right time for VR to be marketed towards the masses, and how do we sustain a steady enough momentum so it's supported my substance and not just hype?

Man do I hate first person shooters, I really hope that is not the thing that pushes vr foward. Its honestly the reason I have no interest in vr cuz I dont like playing in first person.

While so far I can only count metroid prime, bioshock and doom to the first person games I like, its not enough for me to stop disliking that type of mode.

As I mentioned earlier, I too am not an fps fan.  But if this is what it takes to support the hardware in worst case scenario, it makes it less of a risk for other genres.  I'm all for survival horror and VR.  It there's any reason I'll invest in VR is a healthy does of quality survival horror titles.

Then lets hope resident evil 7 kicks things off in a good direction.

I already feel like it is much more than a novelty. I would preffer to never play a racer outside of VR again unless it is a Mario Kart. The on rails shooter genere is a totally diferent and better experience. I think Resident Evil and Far Point will ruin FPS and Horor games for me in January. VR + Motion is just hands down a better experience. Even 3D + Move in games like Killzone 3, Resistance 3, and Gran Turismo 5 made for a massivly better expeirnce.

This is truly the next medium in entertainment. This is as big as the jump from Radio to TV. Just like TV didn't kill radio, VR won't kill TV, but VR is the ultimate way we take in media, and interact with out electronics for the next couple of decades.

I don't like FPS because they have up to now not beenactually viewable or playable in true first person. But to me I feel like I would enjoy FPS in VR. Indeed my preferred TV screen genre of 3rd person action / shooter would seem to be unimmersive in VR. I'm not in the market for VR hardware and won't be for the forseeable future, but I would see myself becomig a fan of good FPS games if I ever got a VR headset. I'd love to play Bioshock in VR.
