I was invested in it just fine, simply for being such a vibrant fantasy world of talking trees, a lost tribe of elf kids, a dark prophecy, etc. Cliche on paper, but delivered on screen with the sincerity and gusto to make it work. Frankly, character development and story is not a major concern of mine in video games.

Well that certainly makes your praise of OoT more understandable.  For me, I need something more than that.  Games can be great without a story, don't get me wrong.  I loved Super Mario 3D World and many other games this gen and previous gens with little story.  But a stronger, more engaging story can make a great game fantastic.

Yeah, we just have different priorities. Don't get me wrong, I love a good story in a video game (Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, and Mass Effect all impressed me in this regard) but for me it's not strictly necessary; a lot of my favourite games have bugger all story.

GTA is overrated as hell imo. Red Dead, on the other hand, is awesome.

Nothing can top Zelda in terms of gameplay imo. I really find every Zelda game, even the not-so-popular Spirit Tracks/Phantom Hourglass, really great games. Level and dungeon design, combined with new weapons and new gameplay mechanics each game is something I truly admire about them. They never cease to amaze me.

Wind waker

A Link to the Past beating out TP and SS speaks volumes to how amazing that game is/was especially for it's time. Ocarina of Time does feel a bit dated when comparing it with some of the newer, more expansive installments but you can't deny the ground it broke. It'll always be the quintessential Zelda title because of the impact it had not only on the series but the entire gaming industry.
