PS4 would be beating 360 and PS3 combined.

The only thing I didn't expect was for both MS and Sony to try to sell upgraded hardware. Everything else I expected pretty much.

Nintendo to make Splatoon and for Splatoon to do really well
Many 3rd party characters in Smash
Zelda Wii U to not be exclusive
Game prices to increase dramatically $40 > $45 > $50 average for 3DS, $60 > $70 > $75 average for Wii U
For the 2DS to be made, and to make it so ugly

I didn't expect to hate a game with "metroid" in the title.

I didn't expect I would want a Xbox One after the Mattrick style assassination.

I didn't expect I would buy a Xbox One S

I didn't expect to be so wholly satisfied with my Xbox One S purchase.

I didn't expect that replaying Lost Odyssey would be my RPG of gen 8 (XCX is my gen 8 exclusive RPG of the gen)

And I didn't expect that Wii U would still be the best console this generation.

didnt expect these mid gen consoles, at least not so soon. ( I dont like it either)
didnt expect Wii U to fail so badly especially coming off the back of Wii
didnt expect to play Destiny so much, its one of the most fun mediocre games ive played.
didnt expect to run through 500gigs of HDD space on PS4 so fast

didnt expect MS to try to pull what they tried.

Didn't expect:

...Zelda to be delayed to the next Nintendo platform.
...Fire Emblem to see a resurgence
...for almost my entirely PS4 library to be remasters (not a bad thing for me)
...for my favorite anime girl to appear in Super Mario Maker
...a game about Japanese idols to be one of my top games this generation
...to fall in love with the Monster Hunter and SMT franchises
...for a handheld to be my favorite platform this generation

Absolutely did not expect Microsoft to show off backwards compatibility with some X360 titles onto the X1, I literally would have put that to being impossible looking at the differences between the X360 and X1 systems.

I didn't expect the Wii-U to be the failure that it was.... I mean, as soon as it was shown off, I knew it was going to be a disaster, but in the previous generation with the Wii being the monster of sales which it was... I have no idea how Nintendo went from a 100m+ selling machine down to a 10m machine, people always point to Sony going from PS2 to the lower sales of the PS3 as a massive drop off but the PS3 managed to sell around 50% of the units of the PS2, but the Wii-U has issues selling 10% of what Nintendo managed with the Wii.

I think at the end of the day people cared more about the wiimote than actual Nintendo stuff

Oh.... I also didn't expect to love drive club as much as I do, given the launch disaster which the game had which was very public in showing every little issue the game was having, when I bought myself a copy of it... then the season pass... and now drive club bikes expansion I've just been utterly blown away with how beautiful the game looks, plays and sounds in every way.

Just after seeing the press attack it so strongly after it came out I was sure it would have played like shit... but the game is just mindblowingly beautiful.
