Well my X1 collects dust, PS4 has had endless hours, and my WiiU has seen some good action as well.
I play and buy what I want.

Lol.It may seem a silly thing, but we are in an international forum.I personally think its best to be the most precise you can, because not everyone here is fluent on English, and they might not always understand the references. |
Except nobody says casually says "I am from America"
when they mean they are from somewhere else in the American continents besides USA.
It's just not done, it is clearly less informative than any other statement you could make (specific country, continent, region).
No other country within the American continent and archipelagos contains the word "America" within it's name, formal or informal.
When referencing all of the American contents, the proper grammar is "the Americas" (plural), given 2 distinct continents.
So there really is no actual confusion when using the term "America" in an English sentence in the manner the OP used.
As evidenced by the fact that nobody was actually confused, despite this being an international internet forum.
Further, "United States" is hardly specific either. The southern neighbor to the USA is in fact "The United States of Mexico".
Plenty of other cases exist, e.g. "Germany" despite a number of "German" tribes existing in multiple nations. (analogous to "America")
Fact is, the name of the USA is itself problematic, because it has no territory in South America. But that's it's name.
"America" is internationally understood as the name of a country whose abbreviation of formal name is USA. Deal with it.

Do you buy a product that was made in your country or made by a company that is from your country? |
Forza Horizon 3 was published by Microsoft which is based in America. Sorry, but I'm still supporting American products and American companies which is the whole point. But nice try :)
That's dumb patriotism imo, if something of your country is about the same quality, then sure buy it, why not, but if it's clearly inferior it makes no sense and you are not really helping.
I can understand it when we talk about little local shops on your neighborhood, specially when is about food, but when we talk about big companies... I don't have any interest on helping them just because they are on my country.

I think I kinda derailed the discussion with my comment, but anyways, ill respond.
Its more a matter of making your message being more easily understood than anything else. The fact that nobody was confused by the term is because everyone here is more informed than the general public.(at least I like to believe so)And I mean, you need to know how to write in english pretty well, so that entry barrier already filters the users. This is more for people that are not users(lurkers) that like to read through the comments and cant comment.Plus, the point of the thread is about products.Saying a product is from America is not as correct or easily understood as saying I am from America.
Furthermore, the example you gave about Germany is rather weak, since that can be implied to many countries."Spain" despite the Americas being mostly compromised of spanish speaking countries,"Portugal" despite other portuguese "tribes" existing worldwide. And the same applies with english. The point is that "United States" is part of the formal and informal name of the country, while for many countries it isnt so, including Mexico. So it would be as specific as using america, which is also the same name of the continents, in my personal opinion.
Im not trying to downplay or step on anyones patriotism here.Im just saying that, in my opinion and I stress this, the term US would be more apropriatte in this discussion, since the discussion itself isnt a US-topic related only.
My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

America is actually two continents North and South.
Sorry, couldn't help busting your balls
As for the OP: Not that there is often a choice, but I will buy products produced in the USA over products produced internationally unless there is a great disparity in price or quality. |
I know it is.After all, it is called The Americas for a reason. But my point still stands, since the names are similar enough.

And foreign products are suject to import tax and sold in American stores, so you're still supporting American companies and the Amrican economy, even if it's mail order. Probably more so than with a digital download from MS who probably doesn't even pay tax in the US ;)
Moving the goalpost still only has you support the US for 33% at most with a physical FH3 copy (same as with any foreign product) instead of when you buy NFS from EA you support your country the full 100%. Nice try ;)
I used to when I was younger. Now I don't care. Whatever I think is the best for me or looks the best.
The only thing I try to stay away from though is supporting products from countries that have ill intentions and people that are racists. Such as Tommy Hilfiger. Used to love his clothes and cologne.

They aren't even the same genre. The product has to be more comparable. I will without a doubt take a Forza game over Gran turismo not only because Forza is better than GT, but because it is made by American publisher. |
Better is subjective but if you only buy American products then how do you know if one of them is better?
You support American companies so do you buy God of War, Uncharted, Infamous and Donkey Kong games that are made by American developers.
I really don't care if a product is made by a company in my country if its good.
