That's the best pop song of the year period..... Katy Perry is generic she only cares about #1 songs that make money and little teen girls could buy

That song is just as generic or worse.

Never been a better time for good musicians, now that streaming is king, it's very important for artists to make GREAT songs. Not just ones that fans can buy off iTunes and listen to once or twice, only for those songs to forgotten when they stop being trendy.

Streaming changed the game, now artists need to make songs that people come back to over and over (every x number of stream counts as a sale), so great music that make people want to listen to regularly will be rewarded on the long-run.

Ehh. Most artists make more from concerts than streams. Streams only give a small amount of money per stream. Though admittedly they at least get something, its a lot more than they get through piracy or used album sales.

Check the bolded, and I don't mean a year or two. Don't forget that Spotify isn't available worldwide yet, streaming will only get more popular. I also expect service providers to be pay up more for artists because many seem to be displeased, unless they are on Apple Music. We'll see how it plays out eventually.

Period really?

This is horrible. Rise is boring to death but this is horrible.

Actually, just checked its charts perfomances, it's a flop, it's dropping everywhere so fast it's alarming. What happened to Gaga?  She can't seem to score big anymore, and that's fine but her music has gotten noticeably worse. This is not pop enough and it's not artistic either.

Paper Route - Chariots is the best song of the year :P

Some of the best songs I have heard this year are:

Burn The Witch - Radiohead
Drone Bomb Me - Anohni
Ivy - Frank Ocean
Óveður - Sigur Ros
Formation - Beyonce
The Wheel - PJ Harvey
Subways - The Avalanches
Kiss it better - Rihanna
Identikit - Radiohead
Good To Love - FKA Twigs

If we talk about the best song in terms of mainstream catchy conventional pop "Into You" form Ariana Grande would be a much better pick than Rise even if I'm not a fan of the artist at all.

Neither Rise nor Perfect Delusion are mainstream though, looking at charts, both seem to be flopping hard. We aren't the unimpressed minortiy, very few find them enjoyable judging by the download and streaming numbers, I bet if the names Katy or Gaga weren't attached to them we wouldn't hear about them.

This year, I jammed to "Be the one - dua lipa", "this is what you came for" and side to side by Ariana.

Your list is great. Rihanna surprised me with Bitch Better Have & My Money and Kiss it Better. I never thought we'd get another album by the Avalanches.

The song of the year is either Space Oddity, Purple Rain, or When Doves Cry.

None of them are new, but they're definitely the ones that seem to have gotten the most play and most respect this year. Otherwise, nothing notable has come out that's new in 2016, so saying "X is the best song" is really empty in meaning. There's nothing that stands out new that can really be be objectively said to be a bigger song than the rest.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Song is pretty meh I'd say

But also lol at all the people here trashing the OP for his like of this generic song and then listing a bunch of other generic songs that are supposedly sooooooo much better

Everybody likes what they like ok....stop acting like you all have such sophisticated taste lol

If don't agree, better than anything Taylor Swift produced?

Any song that is as manufactured and contrived as "Rise" doesn't deserve to even be CALLED a song. It's nothing but product... no art to be found. Written by a professional song writter like Max Martin to make money. Totally void of meaning and soul...

I was basically saying the same thing in the Britney Spears thread.

Though I believe Katy Perry to be a much better singer (vocals, technique ect) than britney spears is.

Spears new album lacks soul too, its just a product, and she cant sing anymore.

Katy Perry kinda has the same feel, of being over produced.

However dispite that I like alot of her songs, this one however isnt anything special.
