How to get HDR 4K working on your PS4 Pro with full surround sound if your AV receiver doesn’t support HDR

"Essentially how we’re going to get HDR visuals on your TV screen and still keep your surround sound intact is by separating the visual and audio streams. We’ll achieve this by connecting your PS4/PS4 Pro directly to your TV and then connecting your AV unit to your TV, via an ARC-HDMI port.

ARC stands for ‘Audio Return Channel’ and does pretty much what it says on the tin, as it splits the audio stream from the visual stream and sends only the audio from the device (in this case the PS4/PS4 Pro) to your AV unit. The upshot of this is that only the audio ends up going through the AV unit and not the visuals, since the latter will be going through your lovely HDR-compliant TV instead."

"The majority of AV receivers manufactured over the last three to four years typically include a HDMI-ARC connection, and when it comes to hooking it all up, you want to make sure that you’re using HDMI 2.0a cables too, simply because any earlier standard cable will not carry the HDR signal.

Once your cabling is all in order, you then want to enable HDMI-CEC in both your TV and your AV receiver as this will allow your AV unit to stream audio from your TV, without taking the video stream along for the ride too. Naturally, implementation of HDMI-CEC will vary between the various brands of TVs and AV units so give your user manuals a flick through so you know how to access it.

After you’ve paired your AV unit to your TV in HDMI-CEC mode, you then want to set your AV unit to receive from ‘TV’ (rather than BD, DVD or whatever other preset you have). Once you’ve done all of this, turn on your PS4/PS4 Pro and you should now have all that 4K HDR goodness going through your nice expensive TV without any degradation, while your surround sound audio is pumped through your surround sound speaker setup."

My personal comment: ARC doesn't support lossless audio.  So if you're using you're PS4 as a Blu-Ray player, you'll loose the lossless audio going from your ARC compatible TV to your A/V receiver.  You'll only have the option of compressed audio.  I'd just get a new A/V receiver.  The sacrifices.

"3D and 4K Ultra HD/60Hz full-rate pass-through with 4:4:4 Color Space support - Helps bring your favorite media to life."

It's does have the pass-through so you're good there.  HDR???  According to this:

4K UltraHD / HDR / HDCP 2.2 / 4:4:4 Color Space

You're good to go. Just run it through your receiver.

My AV unit is several years old and my TV is only 1080p and I don't own a PS4 Pro yet.

I not only feel all these compatibility issues sound complicated but it seems it will be an enormous economical investment before I can enjoy HDR 4K gaming.

And just now I read that OLED screens aren't as good as LCD LEDs at displaying maximum brightness of the HDR range. I'm so confused.

How much do these high-end TV screens cost now for a starter?

High End I would say you have very little choice...

On Sony only the 9** class will do.

2.5k for it

And if you want their top model https://www.amazon.com/Sony-XBR65Z9D-65-Inch-Ultra-Smart/dp/B01HY6W3Z2/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1473791123&sr=1-15&keywords=sony+4k

Anything less than 65" on TV I would say is useless you stay very close to it.

From other brands I haven't looked... but on Sony only those models will have Full HDR enabled. Mine that is 65X850C only have HD-10 which isn't quite there yet, but I have loved looking at it.

Here is the RUB when using ARC, often times it is only capable of outputting Dobly Digital 5.1 at most. Some TV's, even modern ones, may only return 2.1 using ARC.

If your source is any of the HD Audio Formats of Uncompressed audio it will not pass through or the player will downgrade the audio quality to Dolby 5.1.

For some that may be just fine but it is not a good solution for those that care about HD audio.

Damn, they have different names in North America.

I wonder if the Sony XBR65X930D is the same as Sony 65" LED-TV KD65XD9305 here for a bit over $3000.

And the Sony XBR65Z9D  should be Sony 65" LED-TV KD-65ZD for $6000 (lol).

These TVs are not OLED, right? I would prefer an OLED, I heard they are the best.

What does "HD-10" mean on your TV?

Why do you set the limit at 65 inches? That is extremely huge. I think even in a big living room 55 inches is fine. But I really like even bigger. Yeah, I'm gonna start targeting 65 inches.

I personally think the LG OLED TVs are the best on the market at the moment. I say go for one of those if you they are in your price range....which for me they are not at the moment lol.
