On a base level, console warring involves having a purpose, sad as that sounds. Having a fabricated cause to fight for. Social media is rife with this, with the latest news story causing 'outrage' and providing holier-than-thou podiums to preach from.
As kids, it's also defending the big Christmas present your family got you. No kid wants to hear his new fancy gaming thing is sub-par or not getting all the cool stuff. And hey, popularity is good, so the more kids are convinced to ask their parents for the same thing you have, the better off things will be. For poor adults it's defending a major purchase for all the same reasons. Only difference is that kids will play their games when not arguing, adults will more likely be too tired to do that and instead spend their time on message boards and recording 3-hour-long podcasts, both devoted to system warfare.
