People in the 1950s used to fight over Maytag versus Kenmore washing machines, Motorola vs. Zenith TVs, and of course, Ford vs. Chevy. Brand names are a status symbol, at least until a product becomes commoditized as these products have.
And if you think video gaming console wars are bad, that's nothing compared to the Apple vs. Samsung wars on any smartphone article.

Oh yes.... that time was bloody. Dont even get me started on the Street fighter vs Mortal Kombat thing.... or tekken vs virtual fighter
Those were truly dark days to live in as a kid.
Nothing wrong with console wars. Kind of like rooting for a football team.

This. Were it not for console wars, TV, TV, TV or $600 console would be what we'd be getting these days.
I don't even mind the war. I mind the hypocrisy. Every gen, the goalposts move.
Power doesn't matter. Oh, now it matters. Oh, now it doesn't again.
You can't play sales. We're number one. Sales aren't important.
Too many shooters. Now, we're the best place the shooters.
I can't believe you pay for online. Oh, now we pay for online? It's okay, now.
Screw your gimmick. Check out OUR gimmick!
My console does everything. Oh, now your console can do everything? I only care about games.
The whole thing has burned me out. Now, I just play Valkyria Chronicles and drink cognac. I don't play "who has the best box", anymore.
Who are you again?

People enjoy cheering for things they like. Since it's enjoyable, it's not ridiculous.

I disagree. These days it's much worse. Mostly because of the anonymity the internet provides.
Back then, kids would argue that their console was better. But I remember everyone of them was happy to be invited for a videogame afternoon, no matter what system was to be used.
These days, the comments are much more vile than they were back during the 16 bits era. Sure, the console makers would bitch each other, but the fanboys were much more tame.

I remember plenty of vile comments, fights, and all sorts of stuff, particularly in the early 90s. You only hear about it more now because of being online, but the attitudes are much less aggressive in-person. The internet often gives this magnified perception of reality. Then there's the issue of the companies, themselves. Nintendo and SEGA were far more aggressive towards each other than Microsoft and Sony have ever been (despite the addition of the web). |
I lived that age pretty vividly, CGI. There's no magnification or anything in my case. I remember those days very well. And I disagree with your assessment.
