Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto: Super Mario Run designed to draw kids to our dedicated platforms.

I don't know if you understand but Miyamoto is talking about  new customers and new kids, new generation of fans that are playing on smartphones. They're not saying we are gonna make games just for kids. Miyamoto is literally saying that super mario run is being made with that purpose. If you think Nintendo games are for kids then that's your personal opinion.

Generally speaking, that's the demographic they go for. That and 'nostalgia' which plays into your 'younger' memories of Nintendo. It's not controversial to say this, it's a well understood fact. There's nothing wrong with aiming at a younger demographic, I love games like LBP and RAC, but like I said, it would make more sense to broaden the appeal, not cement it even further.

Considering how much sales of Pokemon games increased after the release of Pokemon Go on mobile, it's a no brainer as to why Nintendo is doing the same with Mario.  Super Mario Run will easily be the top downloaded mobile game upon release, and this will lead to tons of youngsters asking mommy and daddy for a Nintendo console so they can get more Mario.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I remember the first time they said this and the amount of people saying that it was an excuse or that it wasn't gonna work that way. Then Pokemon Go came and all those mouths were closed. I don't think there is any fool left that think this is not a smart movement to promote their franchises.

Well, this can work on another side too as people will start to make threads saying Nintendo is going 100% on mobile in the future.

That's a perspective, I don't see colors and cuteness as something for kids, I see it as something for everyone. A 5 year old and a 30 year old could play pikmin, mario and zelda and have the same amount of fun. If pixar make movies for everyone, why Nintendo games are considered for kids? I think that's a stigma from the 90. When Sony or MS develop a game with color, it's not for kids, it's considered different. Another example,Yooka-laylee, everybody want that game I don't see anyone saying "omg a game for kids" why? because it's a game for everyone. should Nintendo make more games like zelda and metroid? I agree, but even those games are for everyone.

Nintendo has the industry's most recognizable and universally well known mascots. The problem is, kids these days aren't buying Nintendo products, and therefore are not exposed to NIntendo's franchises like their parents before them. Angry Birds and Candy Crush have stolen Nintendo's place in many a young mind. Their answer to this is to release smartphone games of their own, make film deals, amusement parks, etc. Which will function as a bit of a "trojan horse" to extend their mindshare to the new generation and worm their way into the hearts of our little ones, eventually leading them back to Nintendo's own lucrative hardware.

I think the steady loss of the younger gaming audience to smartphones has hurt Nintendo a lot more than the loss of "hardcore" adult players to M$ and Sony in the last decade. This is a smarter, and safer strategy than trying to appeal to the older gamers who have already left by (A: Wasting precious development resources on making expensive, gritty titles that won't even appeal to their current dedicated fanbase and have no real guarantee to attract many new consumers, and (B: Getting involved in the unhealthy bidding wars for 3rd party marketing deals.

We'll leave it at that because I can see by the way you've written your reply you're not interpreting my intentions correctly.

It should be noted though at least in Japan, 3DS sales got a boost for about a month and are now down to where they were before Pokemon Go launched.

So while the bump is decent and notable, it's not as if suddenly 3DS is selling massive amount of qualities and things like a YoY bump are easy to have occur because its sales last year weren't great, so you're starting from a low basis.

Of course there will be some spill over, I'm just not convinced right now that it's massive. If 3DS tops Nintendo sales forecasts this year by a large margin, buoyed by Super Mario Run and Pokemon Go, then I would say an effect is happening, but a 1-2 month blip and then a gradual settling down is better than nothing but it's not the be all, end all either.

What I think NX will do is as a platform it will bridge the gap between mobile and Nintendo portable, by allowing the play of smartphone apps directly on the device. So if the mountain won't come to Nintendo, Nintendo will go to the mountain and set up shop at least.

The problem with this strategy is that if they make decent mobile games people will not want to buy Nintendo hardware because, let's face it, casuals and kids have zero taste and they prefer to play Candy Crush to any proper game. Nintendo should have made F2P garbage like everyone else and harass players with ads for Nintendo hardware so that people will want to buy that hardware to avoid the ads and microtransactions.

Not just with this game, Nintendo's been working to expand their brand through various products and projects, from the mobile games to amiibo, theme parks, movies, and other things I'm likely forgetting about. Ninten's been pretty smart in trying to market their things to the audiences.
