Forums - Sony - Forget 4K Blu-ray, as a die-hard PC gamer I'm hugely impressed by the PS4 Pro

Well considering the PS4 Pro doesn't render 4k native and does not have a UHD Player built in. No it doesn't. Its just another underpowered console trying to be like a PC.
Consoles are trying to become more and more like a PC that now it defeats the purpose of even owning a console. My Laptop provides more power than the Pro and I can also use it for work.

If your laptop provides more graphical power than a PS4 Pro, then it would be roughly $1500 retail. "Eh, my laptop that is nearly four times the price is better." No shit.

You pay for what you get mate. With quality comes more dollars. Also its claimable on Tax since its used for work so i got atleast half that back from Tax. So i really didnt pay that much more than what you would on your Pro and my laptop is a 2 years old and can play games better and has more features. Also remember my Laptop doesnt require a subscription to play my games online so it pays for itself.

If your laptop is two years old then it doesn't compete with the PS4's graphical ability unless you spent over $3000USD on it to have dual video chips, and even then it would have to be 870m or higher.

You pay for what you get, but there is a drastic diminishing return on what you get past the $400 pricetag of a PS4Pro.

Lol $3000USD? You can buy a SLi 1080 setup for 3grand that will do 4k native at 60 frames. Where did you pull those numbers from? I paid $2000 AUS with two 970m with an i7 6700 and 16gigs of DDR4 ram. Its a treat.

Reading and comprehension includes actually reading what is written.

And oh no, now it's only five times more expensive and only marginally more powerful.

As a PC gamer i'm excited about both Pro and Neo in the sense that they should bring more performance out of that TFLOP range, that should carry over to PC.

I'll be honest, rocking a 980Ti at 4K and not even thinking about a 1080Ti . More interested in Volta, possibly as my last GPU upgrade for perhaps...ever?

4K TV's are just in their infancy without cable and streaming catching up, it looks like 4K is all you will need for a LONG time and good place to standardize. Consoles giving you good visuals at this resolutions...what on earth are AMd and Nvidia going to sell me on? No need for 200 fps graphics card to game on a 60hz display.

PC gaming needs emerging technologies to move forward. fast.

PC I i7 3770K @4.5Ghz I 16GB 2400Mhz I GTX 980Ti FTW

Consoles I PS4 Pro I Xbox One S 2TB I Wii U I Xbox 360 S

It's still not native 4k whatever way you look at it. Frame Reconstruction, Upscaling? They help, but they aren't true 4k and the quality will be a compromised.

The sweet spot for a Graphics chip at this level is going to be 2560x1440 for 60fps.

I really don't get it... I guess the goal posts will always keep moving. And when the scorpio comes along and can manage 4k@30fps the argument then will be that PCs can do 8k......

Fact is this, faux 4k or not, it would yeild better results than native 1440p. It costs $399 and that's not half bad for what you are getting.

For the past 3yrs, over 90% of all games on the XB1 has been running natively at faux1080p (900p) and a fair number of PS4 games have done the same. Didn't stop over 60M people combined from buying into that.

Being on these forums since the PS4pro reveal it just feels like I'm suddenly surrounded by extremely bitter salty people who can't seem to accept that what the PS4pro has managed to do at $400 is actually impressive.

In truth I'm somewhat disappointed with you... I've always been of the impression that you are one for the most objective posters on this site. But now.... I don't know.

So it's ok for PCs to hit and run at 1440p but when a console by however it does it takes something higher than 1440p and upscales/reconstructs it to be errrily close to 4k all for $399 it's a joke?

Where did you buy your laptop in Australia?

No matter what the apologists say here, the PS4pro should have had the UHD drive. I waited for this to be launched with that capability for my brand new 4k tv. I was going to buy a PS4 this spring when the Neo rumors went crazy and I decided to wait. Then the XB1s comes out with the UHD drive and I almost bought it. I have a launch XB1 and decided the XB1s was not worth the upgrade with the Neo coming out so I waited....

Now the PS4Pro doesn't include that feature? I need a UHD bluray player and the XB1s will be had for about the same price as a standalone UHD bluray player. Easy choice I guess...

Just dissappointed that I will have to wait for the PS4 exclusives a little longer....

So you are choosing a UHD media player.. over exclusive games and content?

While at the same time already having an xbox one?

Are you trading in your OG xbox one, or are you just picking up a second one?

Good questions...

Part of my point is that I need the UHD media player for the entire family, as I just bought a 70inch Samsung 4k tv with HDR.  I buy a ton of blurays and started to buy UHD blurays in anticipation of the Neo.  The benefit i get is that the physical discs come with the bluray+DVD+Digital version of the movie.  So, the kids can watch them while on roadtrips on the car DVD player, on tablets with the digital and on the big screen at home!   Most people don't realise that the streaming 4k content is really not good 4k.

As far as passing up on the exclusives go, I don't miss them if they wait a year.  I admit that was what I was waiting for the Neo for, as my wife agreed that if we had to buy a UHD player, an extra $50-$100  to get a Neo would have been worth it.  PS4Pro=excuse eliminated....

I haven't decided on whether to trade the xb1 for the xb1s.  Might be nice to have 2 around(I have 4 kids).  I will probably trade the xb1 for the xb1s and get the PS4pro in the spring or summer next year when it drops $50 during a special.

It is near the end of the end....

What would be a good SSD drive to put in the pro?
Might as well upgrade the HDD right at the start. Depending on whether pro gets good use out of one (not 20-50% bullshit, minimum twice as fast) since it's still kinda expensive. 1tb SSD drive is almost as much as the pro.

The main advantage of an SSD isn't really the transfer times, it's the stupidly low access times which makes the retreival of data more snappy.

I am a little pickier on my hardware though, but I would avoid any of the TLC NAND drives in my opinion and stick with MLC, but that's just me. :P
