Forums - Gaming - Would it make sense for Sony to add an UHD drive in 12 months?

That's false because you seen me celebrating it (you could argue I'm a frog not a person) .

It could have stated $399 but it's unreasonable to expect a company in thr financial state of Sony to be taking hits.  sure look at Microsoft with their hundreds of billions. Why don't they make a $700 machine and sell it for $500. They can afford to just like Sony could afford to put it in.

Would UHD make PS4 Pro a $700 machine? Based on the $299 X1 S, my guess is no.

Again... the 4K powerhouse opting for standard Bluray was an odd move nobody predicted. Many thought PS4 Neo was going to be a vehicle for pushing UHD.

Many may have thought but it doesn't mean the majority wanted or cared.

I guess UHD isn't taking off now without Playstation.  Blu ray only took off because of Playstation.  I guess Sony are tired of being the guy who has to move the market forward and is catering for the majority along with their profits.

It wouldn't have been a $700 but you clearly missed my point.

I've heard that 4k discs are selling much faster at this point in their life than Blu Ray discs did.

The blu ray player was not what cost Sony billions. It was their "cell" that they bragged so much about as being the greatest thing ever.

It is exactly the opposite of what you say.

The Cell was a collaboration of three companies, lead by IBM. It cost around $500M do develop (plus/minus whom you ask). In today's terms, that is almost peanuts.

Blu-ray costs were very high. It included buying the laser patents, developing the laser prototype into a working product, building the manufacturing plant, co-developing the various discs, and other stuff. All summed up, $2-3Billion easily, almost all charged to Sony.

Usually with slim version they make sure they bring the price down and make it compact and lighter. I would think that will be their priority. To get a compact PS4Pro to 350 or even 300$ in 2yrs time rather than adding UHD drive. May be they will be able to achieve both. They might as well do it. But I doubt it.

Sounds likely you exagerated to make a point.

No I just picked examples of times Microsoft didn't do "what's best"  for the consumer and rush the 360 out without any additional things that weren't needed.

Wifi,  motion sensors in controller,  delaying the 360 to include blu ray and I'm sure there's more.

My point is all companies at times leave out features they don't feel is important to the consumer.  and the reason is they want the price lower which benefits both them and the consumer.

Currently that would cost them about $15-20 per console.  But tech like this drops in price fast.  For all we know it might only cost $5 extra by then.  So they add it in and sell the new improved neo before the scorpio releases.  At $100-200 cheaper too.

Please, stop these naive "milk maiden calculations".

In 2-3 years the "PS5" will certainly have UHD drive anyway. I guess...

Now take a guess how well the adoption of a new format is going to progress.

Oh yeah in 3/4 years when ps5 comes out a UHD Blu-ray player will be very cheap.  Sony will still want their ps5 to play physical games so I think it's safe to say they'll include a 4k player.  4k blu ray market might be more than tiny niche by then and be worth there while too.

Yes, 4K will be more popular  in some years. I think that a 4K TV was the best selling item in the USA's last Black Friday.
