Forums - Nintendo - A (delusional) arguement for Nintendo becoming third party developer.

IMO Nintendo would be better off just accepting a deal with Microsoft. They could take control of the XBox division and retain a good chunk of the licensing fees/royalties and keep control of hardware design.

Microsoft would allow it because I don't think Microsoft is really all that enamored by the game business anyway. They like the prestige the XBox brand gives them, but letting Nintendo take management of said brand over I think they'd be OK with that.

Nintendo could also release games for Windows PC in that scenario.

Sony can't match that deal because I doubt they'd be willing to share control and licensing fees of the Playstation division with Nintendo. It's a better deal for Nintendo than just turning into a regular third party.

A joint Nintendo + XBox platform would sell at least 50-60 million consoles (plenty for Nintendo to gain a wider audience), have all the third party support, and they'd also have Windows PC users to tap into, which is tens of millions more in consumers.

Plus, they regain access to Rare's old IPs.

Nintendo has the recognizable and fun characters, while Microsoft has the ambitious hardware to get the job done.

Also, Metroid with Gears of War weapons is a nice thought.

It also makes sense because Microsoft could keep their XBox division staff employed too ... MS' HQ is like right across the street from Nintendo of America so they could just work with NOA.

Even though they are a US company, I think MS really just likes the XBox division because it gives them something to point to and say "see? we have this other fun hardware division". Let them keep a foot in that water and they'll be happy I feel. They don't need the money from the game business, it means virtually nothing to their bottom line.

This would be a much better situation for Nintendo than just going third party. Why go third party when you can get a pretty sweet deal from MS and still retain a lot of control. In fact I think Nintendo could negotiate a deal where they get a 60-40 split of third party revenue. It's not like MS really needs it.

It also kinda bails MS out of the long term problem of potentially having to sell the XBox division. Letting Nintendo basically run it but still having an ownership stake, is a good compromise for them.

And getting a sweetner like say Nintendo games on the Windows Store for PC would be a big catch for MS in combating Steam.

I think some people just don't understand the appeal Nintendo IPs have, and how bad they manage they hardware development.
Going third party would be good for both of this. Nintendo would have more room to work with their games without the costs of holding the development and research on hardware, and their games would have a way, way bigger reach than they have nowdays, that would mean both costs reduction and more games being sold.

Also, Nintendo is a different case from the other consoles developers.
Nintendo doesn't have many reasons to bring people to their hardware devices other than selling games, as the others do, which make holding a hardware a good strategy on other aspects for them, while selling the most games possible is the best for Nintendo.
Nintendo doesn't compete tech wise with the others, so they hold no real ground to hold a different system, other than the "gimmicks" they may want to push on their controllers, which could also be side controllers to another platforms just as well.
Nintendo IPs are held back by the lack of market understanding the company have, which has been making their hardware go down constantly, reducing their consumers totals, while their games are both widely known and nostalgia filled, which without a doubt means they have lots of possible consumers to their games they just are not delivering to because they want to make them stick with their hardware to be able to do it, while the others developers are the ones that primarly attract those gamers.

I also don't understand why people think Nintendo quality would go down if they went third party, it would only go down if that means they only work well pressured as they are trying to make games to sell hardware, which is not the case, as they don't sell much hardware anyway, but keep selling games well.

Also the possible drawback on having less profit with each games as they would have to share some with the hardwares makers if going third party, would very likely be more than covered by the amount of games being sold now and the lack of development and research costs.

Nintendo may not be in need to go third party, they are far from "doomed", but it would be on their best interest to do so, IMO, as that would make them profit more, which would make more money available to make more games and marketing, etc.

You cant just assume bigger install base automatically equals bigger sales.

Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, Black/White, X/Y have all sold in the 15-17 million range.

Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, Mario 64 DS, Mario 3D Land have all sold 11-12 million.

Animal Crossing sold very similar on DS & 3DS.

Kirby's Adventure, Dream Land 2, Super Star, Kirby 64, Nightmare in Dreamland, Amazing Mirror, Super Star Ultra, Squeak Squad, Mass Attack, Epic Yarn, Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe all average out to about 2 million.

Metroid, Metroid II, Super Metroid, Fusion, Prime, Prime 2, Prime 3, Other M all sold about 2 million give or take.

Mario Party 1-7, 9, 10, Advance, Island Tour have all sold around 2 million give or take as well.

The primary sellers on PS4/XBO consist of shooters, sports & action games, about 75% of all retail software sales come from these 3 genres. Nintendo primarily makes platformer, simulation, puzzle, party, strategy/turn based RPG & arcade style games which really dont have alot of success on PS/XB so there isnt any evidence to support the idea that most Nintendo games would see a major increase in sales by going 3rd party.

Well, Sega did go third party. Look what happened to them.

That just hurts.

I would have certainly bought many of their games this gen if they had released them on PS4.

I think this is not an unreasonable argument. But I fear if Nintendo ever became third party they would prefer to release their games on mobile platforms before releasing them on others traditional consoles because of their pride.

Join Xbox. It would give the Xbox MUCH needed Japanese dev support. And Nintendo wouldn't have to worry about making hardware.

Seeing how Sony will support more smartphones with their own software rather than their own handheld due to it beeing a miserable flop, betting on their systems longterm is really bad move. Even in the worst case scenario, NX will be supported for at least 1 generation and who knows what the market will look like. Console sales have been quite stagnant this year and who knows how many times they can pull of a mid-generation update until consumers get fed up.

The cost to develop and compete on foreign software would damage Nintendo.

Nintendo more or less controls costs right now because they set the limits to their own systems and know from the start what they can do. If they have to learn new hardware adapt to it and compete against other third parties on a even playing field which they really have never done since the NES/Famicom then they are going to start off in a bad position early on. They might eventually come out of it but time and money would be loss.

Their best bet if ever going third party is sticking to just mobile or PC gaming, but losing face by going into hiatus as a hardware manufacturer still would damage them in gaining the trust of third parties and others in the future.

Their hiatus was the Virtual Boy and as you can see they were never really the same afterwards.

Nintendo fans would move to another console, and may not move back so it wouldn't work

There is only one reason for Nintendo to go 3rd party, consumer friendliness.

Yes, as friendly as to have to pay to play MK, Smash and Splatoon online...
