I think some people just don't understand the appeal Nintendo IPs have, and how bad they manage they hardware development. Going third party would be good for both of this. Nintendo would have more room to work with their games without the costs of holding the development and research on hardware, and their games would have a way, way bigger reach than they have nowdays, that would mean both costs reduction and more games being sold. Also, Nintendo is a different case from the other consoles developers. Nintendo doesn't have many reasons to bring people to their hardware devices other than selling games, as the others do, which make holding a hardware a good strategy on other aspects for them, while selling the most games possible is the best for Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't compete tech wise with the others, so they hold no real ground to hold a different system, other than the "gimmicks" they may want to push on their controllers, which could also be side controllers to another platforms just as well. Nintendo IPs are held back by the lack of market understanding the company have, which has been making their hardware go down constantly, reducing their consumers totals, while their games are both widely known and nostalgia filled, which without a doubt means they have lots of possible consumers to their games they just are not delivering to because they want to make them stick with their hardware to be able to do it, while the others developers are the ones that primarly attract those gamers. I also don't understand why people think Nintendo quality would go down if they went third party, it would only go down if that means they only work well pressured as they are trying to make games to sell hardware, which is not the case, as they don't sell much hardware anyway, but keep selling games well. Also the possible drawback on having less profit with each games as they would have to share some with the hardwares makers if going third party, would very likely be more than covered by the amount of games being sold now and the lack of development and research costs. Nintendo may not be in need to go third party, they are far from "doomed", but it would be on their best interest to do so, IMO, as that would make them profit more, which would make more money available to make more games and marketing, etc.

You cant just assume bigger install base automatically equals bigger sales.
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, Black/White, X/Y have all sold in the 15-17 million range.
Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, Mario 64 DS, Mario 3D Land have all sold 11-12 million.
Animal Crossing sold very similar on DS & 3DS.
Kirby's Adventure, Dream Land 2, Super Star, Kirby 64, Nightmare in Dreamland, Amazing Mirror, Super Star Ultra, Squeak Squad, Mass Attack, Epic Yarn, Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe all average out to about 2 million.
Metroid, Metroid II, Super Metroid, Fusion, Prime, Prime 2, Prime 3, Other M all sold about 2 million give or take.
Mario Party 1-7, 9, 10, Advance, Island Tour have all sold around 2 million give or take as well.
The primary sellers on PS4/XBO consist of shooters, sports & action games, about 75% of all retail software sales come from these 3 genres. Nintendo primarily makes platformer, simulation, puzzle, party, strategy/turn based RPG & arcade style games which really dont have alot of success on PS/XB so there isnt any evidence to support the idea that most Nintendo games would see a major increase in sales by going 3rd party.
