Forums - Nintendo - Emily Rogers: NX Below XB1/PS4 In Power; Battery Life Is Not Great

Battery Life — Ehhh not great. I haven’t heard an exact number of hours, but it doesn’t sound great.

What a stupid statement. You can't say it doesn't sound great without knowing a number. Just tell the number.

Yeah, that's too subjective without a number. A lot of people would hear "3-5 hours" and think "that doesn't sound great", but that's literally the gaming battery life of the 3ds and the Vita.  I'd sure like better than 3-5 hours but I'd be totally happy with that.

Sounds terrible. I really want to know what's going on in Nintendo's mind right now.

Again, she does not state her sources. She also mentions that they are just rumours that should be taken with a grain of salt, so why listen to what she's saying at all?

Why not?

Because she's basically saying that everything she said could be wrong.

720p on a screen the size of the Gamepad is insanely pixel dense. I am not really sure why people think it isn't. It would be higher than any tablet currently on the market.

i have to say... ignorance. 720p on a handheld is fantastic. i mean, look at the vita, the has a lower resolution and is fantastic.

I'll gladly trade that big screen for more battery life. 4.5-5 inches screen is more than fine for me.

Id rather trade how "thin & light it is" than screen size & power.

Just make it bigger/thicker and get it a massive battery.

Bigger than 6.2? You must have big pockets 0.0

Or right.

Just thinking out loud... it's pretty usual for modern laptops to run at variable clocks in order to save battery and it may be the case for NX too. Also it's possible NX may need active cooling only when docked and running full speed.

edit:

I'll make a guess.

The NX is indeed based on the Tegra X1 20nm chip, just like the devkits (as Eurogamer reported). When the console is docked it is exactly equivalent to the Nvidia Shield TV in terms of raw power (which is active cooled), so we're talking 512gflops.When detached the console runs about half-speed to save battery, so it becomes more or less equivalent to the WiiU (which is more than enough power for a portable device imo). Even running half-speed I believe the X1 wouldn't be terribly energy efficient, add a 6.2 screen and you'll have a 'not great' battery life.

I also wound't be suprised if we'll get the Tegra X2 chip for the New NX revision in a couple of years.

People need to stop talking about SoCs at random. The Parker-X2 (Pascal) is an enormous SoC for cars, no one is going to use that in a handheld.

The NX is already rumored (heavily) to not be on Maxwell to begin with, its going to be Pascal. The information provided here is obviously of a similar source as the Eurogamer source and not representative of the finalized kits or model. Loud fans would be the first give away.

They are not going to use an X1. The dev kits are running a maxed out X1 for performance reasons to match where a Pascal-based chip would ballpark. Nvidia's development of 20nm Pascal is only recent, and so the kits that are leaking would not be representative of the newer chipsets. No one is running an X1 in handheld maxed in a retail unit unless they want to start fires, especially 14mm thick ones.

Sounds honest then.
