Even on physical games? I've never had to wait more than 15 seconds to install a physical game, and then upon getting into that game I've never noticed being locked out of any features.

Digital I defininitely have, but never had this personally on the physical games that I own.

Yes, you get locked out of features until it finishes. It's not very noticeable because games  lead you through the path where things are already installed. As an example, it isn't noticeable on Shadow Fall and InFamous.

In Uncharted 4, you can't go directly to MP. You couldn't also jump to a point mid-game, but it isn't a problem when you play it for the first time. On Mortal Kombat X, it installs history mode and versus first, krypt and arcade are locked. Star Wars BF puts you in a tutorial with Darth Vader to buy some time.

They are actually quite ingenuous when dealing with this stuff. It's not noticeable in most cases, unless when you reinstall a game you've already played and have a save file that's more advanced. It's the same tech that it used to allow you to play while you download, only less apparent because install times are usually way shorter than download times. PS4 uses a notebook HDD, but even a high class SSD couldn't just install a 50GB game as fast as the few seconds PS4 takes, so what it does is to install things in an order defined by the game developer to allow gameplay immediatily, while it keeps doing its stuff on background.

As big as you can get. Game sizes are getting huge and even if you do buy physical you still have to install the damn thing.

If I were to buy a PS4, what size HDD would you recommend me upgrade to and what brand?

PS4 Slim is just around the corner.  And just in case I opt NOT to go with the Slim, I better grab a non-slim while I can.  But I want to make sure I "future proof" the HDD space to minimize having to upgrade.

Some factors to consider:

1) I prefer physical media over digital when given a choice.

2) I don't mind digital games when it's my ONLY choice.

3) If I absolutely love a game, I try to aquire all DLC for it.

4) I will not be storing a bunch of full sized movies on it.  Maybe a bunch of short clips.

5) I could use the PS4 as an audio/music media center as I once did with my PS3.

Please understand that some of the above factors may not apply becasue of my ignorance of PS4 features.  Also, please discuss any features I might want to consider that will affect HDD space.  Thanks, all.

You can't transfer and store media files like that on PS4 (unlike PS3). So instead of that, I use a media server on my computer to watch movies on my PS4. It doesn't take up any space on the PS4. It's just streamed from my PC.

As for me, I'm similar to you in that I prefer physical, and I get digital games some times. If there's a really good deal on PSN for example.
But one thing to keep in mind is that most digital versions of games are the same/similar in size to physical games, because PS4 requires you to install the full game from the disc.

I made due with 120GB on PS3, and deleted most games I no longer play or have finished. (I also had some movies and music.)
For PS4 I don't think 500GB is the equivalent of 120GB for PS3, and after asking some friends who are like me when it comes to physical over digital, I was given the advice of 1TB by most of them, so that's the version I bought.
That said, I haven't used up much of it yet (Maybe 200 GB), as the only full game I currently have is Street Fighter V. But there's a sharing feature that lets you save and upload screenshots and videos, which I use every now and then. And those vids can take up some space as they save the last 15 mins of your gameplay by default. You can of course trim those vids down and then delete the files after you've uploaded them. But I tend to collect several recordings during one play session some times, so that can take up some space.

So are you saying that if I had taken a video with my cell phone, I cannot copy that file to the PS4 for storage and viewing?

Also, when I insert inFamous Second Son into the PS4, I'm required to copy the game to the HDD to play.  Am I correct?

I have a 2TB, the 500GB it came with got filled up.

to be honest i am quite happy with my 500gb, i am not playing all my games anyways all at the same time. I delete one if i am finished or not intending playing it for now.

A lot of japanese games arent taking so much space anyways and have view patches, same is true for indies so it depends what type of games you are playing. If you love AAA or Online only games mostly then yea get a bigger HDD.

You can always upgrade later with a 2TB internal HDD

2TB is the right choice, although I have only used like half of the memory so far I'm sure that by the start of next year it is going to be full since a bunch of great games are coming out.

For your requirements I'd say.. 2TB as a base. Game installs and DLC's take up a lot of data nowadays and you'll fill up a 500GB in no time.

Also, forget about SSD's and hybrid HDD's.. they don't make much of a difference to overall performance (and loading times) to justify the cost. Well, unless you have some money to burn, that is.

1.) Correct. Perhaps they'll include that feature in a future firmware update.
2.) Yes. And the files tend to be around 30-50GB. But the good news is that PS4 usually allows you to start playing the games after only a few % has been installed (after a few seconds), and the rest is installing while you play.

1.) That's retarded.

2.) I'm starting to understand that from what I'm gathering from everyone else.  But I can delete the game data but keep my saved game so I continue playing after reinstalling the game from the disc, correct?

As big as possible. If you don't mind your PS4 being ugly, get yourself some addon to support 3,5" HDDs. That way you can get 4 TB, 6 TB or 8 TB. If you don't like that and only want to use 2,5", get 2 TB.

The only reason to get 1 TB would be if you find a cheap offer for a console with 1 TB pre-installed.

500 GB isn't an option at all imo.

I think 2TB ones are less than 100$ now so I would recommend it. At first it looks a lot but you have to remember it has to be enough for some years.  500 GB can ofcourse be enough but if you put a older game in and have to install it again with patches that can easy be over 10 GB with possible also downloading some DLC  and you potentially spend a hour or more installing it. I don't have much time so everything that saves time is welcome.
