Forums - Gaming - [Eurogamer] PS4 slim is real (new images, now with video!)

ok from the multitude of high quality size comparison images available now I've deduced the following.

The New PS4 Model has the approximate dimensions of 268x40x282 mm

Compared to the OG Model with the dimensions of 275×53×305 mm.

This makes the new slim ps4 approximately 32% smaller in terms of volume.

Quite good considering the OG PS4 was already quite small considering the power it made and it used an internal power supply.

I wonder is there is going to be a fire sale on the current PS4s to make way for the Slim.

I doubt it. The case of the new model looks much cheaper IMHO, so I suppose they will find enough people to buy the old model instead of the slim until it is phased out... unless the slim has some major advantages.

I'm leaning towards the current older model.  So we'll see what I do.

Other then height you won't notice a huge difference really.

Approximately:

It's width is 2.6% less.

It's length is 7.6% less.

It's height is 24.6% less.

Still as you said, it is quite impressive considering the small size of the OG ps4, and the internal PSU.

I doubt it... however once they reveal the PS4 slim, everyone will probably match it in price.

Old PS4 will be at 249$ soon, along side the PS4 slim.

The original design is better. Hopefully it's more than just a redesign or else I'm out.

If you are calculating with 305mm length, you get the wrong surface size of the side and therefore also the wrong volume.

It is a rhomboid/parallelogram, not a rectangle. So you have to multiply the height with the length of the upper (or lower) edge (~275 mm), not with the total length (305 mm). Geometry is fun!

I think they will try to fokus on a very big audience, like they did with the ps2. The success of the Ps4 is a huge point for their marketing (and the future marketing for the Ps5 and their exclusive deals). So I think the Ps4 Slim will be 200-250€, going to 199€ as Christmas Sales. So they will have huge sales and will make a price like 399€ for the Neo.

I also think they will go this route. This gen showed them that, at least in the US, the cheaper console is winning. So making the PS4 Slim cheaper than the One S is reasonable, specially because it is cheaper to manufacture due to using GDDR5 memory instead of DDR3 plus a big SoC to fit EDRAM. The only way the PS4 won't be cheaper than the X1 is if Sony doesn't want it to be.

A 400 price point for the Neo would also be pretty good. If it doesn 1440p/1600p in games and upscale it to 4K, it would look pretty darn impressive for that price point.

You are correct, while the dimensions I listed may be accurate, I should have not used those dimensions alone to calculate volume, though assuming the angle of the slant of the console is the same on both consoles the percentage I gave would be accurate regardless of if the cm3 used to calculate that was inflated, as they'd both be inflated to the same degree.

Regardless I have recalculated the volume using the surface area of the side face, so I'll revise my calculation slightly from my original stated 32%.

By my calculations the new PS4 Model is approximately 34.25% smaller (in terms of volume).

But take that with a grain of salt, I'd give a range of 32%-35.5%

I dont really care about the console on the outsides looks, It looks fine imo.
They just have to nail that 249$ price point.

Honestly the fact that it doesnt have ultra-hd blu-ray who cares? consoles are for gameing on.
It ll still be those 30-40% faster than the xbox one, in the area where it matters, games.
No HDR is maybe abit dissapointing, but seeing as I dont have a HDR tv... meh.

- there are people that think uhd is a nice feature to have

- consoles are not for gaming alone anymore, not since the ps2 and its dvd player

- hdr is really expensive currently but the picture is definitely a *lot* better due to the increased bit depth

- nobody doubted the power the difference to go away with the redesigns

but I think the same applies to VR - you have to see it to believe it.

Whsts interesting, is that the console may not have a UHD Bluray drive, doesnt mean it can play back uhd movies. Be it downloaded or via netflix. Also means it doesn't support HDR 10 at the veey least. All it needs for that is HDMI 2.0.

Anyways, funny how much better the console looks in the one picture taken by a professional.
