My all time favourite horror game is Fatal Frame 4. Something about Japanese horror gets under my skin in a way that Western horror just doesn't. From its potent atmosphere, to its tense ghost-busting combat, to its surprisingly deep and moving story, it's just a masterful production through and through.

The original Dead Space comes in second. It's not quite as scary, but its dismemberment mechanics still make for one of the most satisfying combat systems out there, and there's still plenty of well constructed jump scares and a wonderfully grim, industrial sci-fi aesthetic.

RE1-RE3 on PS1 and RE CV on Dreamcast. Those are the peak games of survival horror imo.

8/10. No Silent Hill 2 or 3, and no Fatal Frame Crimson Butterfly.

Resident evil 4 and 5 where great games, Until Dawn was also pretty great, but a tad short. But the greatest game with horror elements is undoubtedly The last of Us, fighting off clickers in closed hallways and the occasional arregate scene is as good as it gets.

As for atmosphere an design of monsters and zombies I have to say Bloodborne deserves to be mentioned. On top of that the game is majestic. The first Bioshock had also some moments which made use of the elements that make up for a good horror. Most of my best horror moments in games aren't from typical horror games, but I van appreciate the genre nonetheless.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Ooh, Silent Hill is a good series. SH2 was the 1st horror game I played and it was a good one. It had me on edge at almost all times when I played it. As I progressed further into the game, it kept getting better and better. When I finished the apartments, I thought the game couldn't get worse. Then I moved on the the hospitial. After that, I thought nothing could top that, and then I hit the prison. It was really scary, and excellent, and it got me into horror.

Though, my favorite series is Fatal Frame. I think ghosts scare me more than weird monsters, which could be why FFrame is my favorite. The 1st game did atmosphere and lighting very well. I was always in fear when I played, feeling something could come after me at any time, and would happen eventually. Overall, really great horror game and was my favorite horror game, until I played FFrame 4. That game is like a mix of Fatal Frame and Silent Hill, not only having ghosts attack you, but just some things moving and making strange sounds, as if the game is just messing with you. It almost as if the player is losing their mind. It was truly a horror masterpiece and so far is my favorite horror game.

It's interesting that you refer to yourself as a "graphics" person. I guess I would be like the opposite, which could be why some of my more recent favorable horror games would be small indie games made with the look of 16 bit SNES games. They probably don't look scary to most people, but I've found them to be and to be quite fun. Some of them I would list are 'Ib', 'Yume Nikki', 'Bevel's Painting', 'Blank Dream', and 'The Witch's House'

I could probably go on about Horror, but I probably shouldn't talk on for too long. So I'll just end with the games I listed.

I played the original Silent Hill and it just wasn't my type of game. I liked the original Resident Evil games because they were somewhat grounded. The puzzles, letters, music... the fact that you were slowly uncovering some huge corporate (and later family) conspiracy... it was just so intriguing. Silent Hill just felt like a someone's nightmare or a bad acid trip. It was more one dimensional.

Favorite franchise is Fatal Frame, as individual game, I would recommend OG White Day : a Labyrinth named School.

Eh, I disagree that Silent Hill was more one-dimensional mainly due to the constant feeling of things changing at every second. Once you learn of the story, you start to grasp that nothing is what it seems.

For me, it did horror much better than Resident Evil.

Resident Evil was a horror, survival, action, mystery and puzzle game in one. It also had a rich backstory that you slowly uncovered as you went along via photos, movie slides and letters etc. It just had way more depth than Silent Hill.

I don't really have a favorite horror franchise. I usually only really like one or two games in a franchise.

Some of my favorites would be:

Eternal Darkness
Resident Evil 4
Dead Space
Condemned: Criminal Origins
F.E.A.R
F.E.A.R 2
ZombiU
Silent Hill 4: The Room
