CGI mate, that's a picture taken with a camera. Who are you fooling?

Honestly even todays games are unbelievely good looking to me.
I think Detroit become human does a great job of it.
Very pretty... and real life is quite artistic... if you design your own tree, or valley and each color of a canyon it's artistic...
I dunno why people enter a thread on photorealism to say they prefer cartoon.

That model is really, really horribly designed. The facial proportions are all wrong, it looks like a mouth, eyes, and a nose from three different people were all stuck together, there's no cohesion.
I've seen current gen humans that look better.

The entire purpose of showing that model (and essentially why this thread exists in the first place) wasn't for anything but graphical purposes, not attractiveness/beauty. Besides, it's an incomplete version of the character. |
I confess I am somehwat ignorant of the technology involved, but holy crap, that's one ugly motherfucker. All the graphical bells and whistles in the world aren't much help if the underlying design work is poor, and I sure as hell hope the standard for a "next gen" human looks a lot better than that. Even as someone who is satisfied with Wii U graphics and still enjoys Wii games in glorious SD, I cringed looking at that model.
Surely there's a better example?
I wonder if some next generation games will strive for pre-filterable representations ...

You do know that there are ugly people in world right? So it's quite possible that this guy have a real world equivalent.

It looks artificial in a distinctly artifical way though. It's not cohesive the way even an ugly natural face is.

There is some strangeness in it, but I wouldn't doubt you would meet someone that would look very similar to it.

I know that on paper the specs divide is considerable, I was referring more to how that manifests in the actual visual impression that I see on screen. For instance, a game can have 10 times as many polygons, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will look 10 times as good to an observer. I feel like the rule of diminishing returns combined with their mid-range-in-2013 hardware is preventing PS4 and Xbox One from providing the kind of gargantuan visual leap over PS3/360 that I have come to expect from the generational transitions I've lived through in the past. This is the first generation where I haven't had that "holy crap, how is this even a video game" moment that I got from Gears 1 in 2006, or Rogue Squadron 2 in 2001. |
Driveclub looks incredible, you should play it to see what a huge upgrade the graphics have got this generation.
The big upgrades this generation have been in the image quality and dynamic lighting which are not easily observed on the internet. When you play it you will be amazed.
