Good design.

Stupid typing.

Very stupid that it has a "thing". That's why this generation sucks. Everything has to be a thing. You can't just have a new Pokémon with a nice design, no, they HAVE to have a stupid unique ability or move that changes everything in battle or something. Ugh.

Dragon/Fire, one of the most sensible yet rarely used typings, is stupid? Being unique and standout is bad, especially among a crowd of 800+? That's some ass-backwards logic, but to each their own I guess!

I haven't really been following the new pokemon announcements, but these unique moves seem to be a common thing now

As previously announced today at 17:00 CEST news regardin Pokémon Sun/Moon were shared. Turtonator, a Fire/Dragon type Pokémon was announced.

Turtonator has an exclusive move called Shell Trap: if Turtonator uses Shell Trap at the beginning of a turn and is hit by a physical move during that same turn the opponent will be hit by a powerful explosion that will deal a higher damage than the one Turtonator received.

During the stream we also had the chance to see the Normal type Z-move used by a Pikachu in a Battle Royale !

fun fact OP, the pokemon is based off the Mata Mata turtle which lives in the Amazon

his design makes more sense when you realize what it's based off of

Fire/Dragon is a stupid typing because that thing doesn't look like a Dragon-type in any way shape or form.

Being unique and standout is bad because if everything is a standout it gets boring and overblown.

It's an edgy reptile, seems dragon enough to me. Plus there's no rule that Pokemon absolutely must look their type, such an arbitrary restriction would only limit designs.

So if all fighters in Smash Bros. played exactly the same, that'd make the game less likely to get boring? What!? It's options and variety that keep things fresh since you're able to do different stuff and have differences experiences rather than the same exact thing every single time.

All typings have some slight restrictions to what they should look like, though (or at least they used to). Dragon-types up to today always either looked like actual dragons, or like they had some sort of "dragon element" power (Goomy). This turtle looks just like a turtle with absolutely no Dragon-type properties whatsoever. Maybe nowadays they're focusing more on creating nice typings regardless of design, but that's certainly not what Pokémon used to do - which was to first create the design of a Pokémon, then give it a fitting typing.

And about Smash, no, I wouldn't want all fighters to play the same, just as well as I wouldn't want them all to be extremely gimmicky. There has to be a balance. If they all played the same, the game would be very boring and wouldn't have any variety (can't think of an example here). If they were all gimmicky and had their "unique" thing, it would become a mess because the whole game would boil down to knowing the unique gimmick of your opponent (Rivals of Aether). Smash actually has a pretty good balance between gimmicky and "normal" fighters.

So what Pokemon used to do is automatically the best thing to do? Turtonater is a reptile so already more Dragon-like than the likes of Kindra, Altaria, n Goodra. Plus I just looked it up and apparently there is such a thing as Dragon Turtles in Chinese mythology. Also that's a lot of undefined terms there. "Dragon element power?" you mean like spitting fire? Don't know what the difference between "normal" "gimmicky" and "balanced" is in this context, but I do know that not a single Smash fighter plays exactly the same as another, and although there are a few clone characters they have slightly different moves and stats.

Knowing the match-up is always a key factor and has especially been the case in Pokemon, where the first thing you even do in a battle is consider match-ups to decide which Pokemon to bring out. Lastly, why are you just now complaining about new moves and abilitys as if they haven't always added more every single generation, especially gen 5 with hidden abilitys. The only real new gimmick in Sun & Moon is the Z-Moves which I definitely understand having concern over, but atleast unlike Mega Evolution that's something every Pokemon has access to.

No offense, but you don't know what you're talking about There's a lot of dragons with turtle bodies in Asian mythology... the most obvious one would be the Feng Shui dragon turtle.

Another awful looking Pokemon. If it's this bad now, just imagine what future gens will look like ugh

At least they're actually focusing on each Pokemon. People complained how some pokemon were so generic, now people are complaining because they're too unique?

I don't get it.

Gotta stop clicking on these. There won't be any Pokemon I don't already know about by the time the games release

Looks like a cool Pokemon though.

I remember when Serebii had an article about some pokemon leaked. It was the entire pokedex, but at the time I didn't realize. Considering how no one expected a 70 pokemon pokedex, I looked at all the Pokemon and didn't go on any pokemon website until the game released. It was only a week later did I realize that I was a dumbass and spoiled all the new pokemon for myself.
