Forums - Nintendo - Devs behind Pokemon Uranium fan game remove download links after takedown notices

As spemanig explained, this doesn't mean anything. Call me when they take down Pokemon Showdown!

The fact that people get so pissed when the owner of an IP doesn't want said IP to be used without permission just speaks volumes to the entitlement of an entire generation. That and ignorance.

Not surprising, but is unfortunate for those who spent a lot of time making this game

though i'm sure they knew this would happen and downloads will still be floating on the internet..

Maybe if they had one once of originality, they'd make a game that could garner the same amount of attention without ripping off someone else's IP.

I feel like people are missing the bit where Nintendo let this game get downloaded 1.5 million times before it got taken down. Same with AM2R. Nintendo doesn't care about good fan games existing. They care about maintaining the right to take down actual egregious infringements on their copyrights. They're only doing this to flex their muscles. The more games like this they let go by, the harder it is to protect their IP because they'll be seen as too lenient.

Neither AM2R or Uranium were secrets. If Nintendo actually wanted to, they could have taken these games down ages ago before they were even close to completion. In fact, I'm 100% sure that the only reason they even had to step in was because of the real media coverage those games have been receiving. Uranium is far from the first Pokemon fan game, but I can't remember a single one that was completed and then covered by a site like IGN immediately after. Almost none of those other ones got shut down. Do the math.

People who create fan games don't care that they have to remove download links to a game that has already been torrented. They just want people to be able to play their games. That's still going to happen in both cases. All Nintendo did was take out a figurehead. No real damage has been done to either of these games or their creators, and Nintendo knows it.

This makes sense.

I think reason why this got ended up taken down is because it actually got into media.

Generally, Nintendo's pattern on taking down fan games have been 'If it gets media attention, kill it.'

I was hoping that Pokemon Uranium would slip pass under Media attention...

Well they are the ones making the games.

The problem with a company allowing fan games is that it sets a legal precedent for others to legally copy their trademarks. It is part of the law that a company must defend its trademarks, or it loses their rights to them.

What Nintendo should have done is hired these people, gave them a job and released the game properly.

Nintendo also tends to attack and shut down youtube video's as well, Nintendo is very strongly against anyone who produces content that even hints towards Nintendo's I.P. these days... And Nintendo should be ridiculed for it, Sony and Microsoft, heck most companies don't go to such lengths, many companies even support such efforts.

I don't think just hiring random people works like that, especially if we're talking about video games or films or shows.

As for YouTube, it's hard to tell because the news of Nintendo monetizing videos kinda died down for me as time went by. Plus, Nintendo has been involved on YouTube through their channel and having devs and others being guests for interviews and other stuff. I remember a cooking channel guest starring Miyamoto and Trinen, Game Theorists debating against Reggie, Nintendo Minute having YouTube stars and Smash Bros. players as guests.

Nope. The Pokemon Company owns the IP, that's their whole reason for existence

The Pokemon Company is owned by GameFreak, Nintendo & Creatures Inc with each having a 1/3 share each.

So Nintendo only makes 1/3 of the money from Pokemon games?
