Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Starbound Thread: 1.2 Vault Update

Today on Starbound, we learn how to make friends in the SB world... For example!

Hey, sometimes I stare at rocks too! Nothing to be ashamed of...

However, sometimes the tenants get into trouble and action needs to be taken for these crimes!

You sir have committed a serious offence! Don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine...

On a side note, I visited a fire planet, which occasionally rains fire... which is bad for any buildings you may encounter.

It's the end of the woorld as we know it~

And last but not least, a view of my colony (as much as I could get of it anyways).

It's a little crowded, but it works.

Holy hell you've been posting a lotta pics lately, I really need to get off my ass and post some of my own. I need to break free from WoW for a bit (been trying to catch up on professions so I'm not left behind when Legion launches).

No need to feel pressured Cloudy. Things ain't fun when they become just jobs.

Haha, you guys got me. Admittedly, I'm trying to post often to keep this place active, but it will get tiresome if I keep going daily. I'll slow down a lil bit then to avoid that. I do keep finding cool things to post though, haha.

I know I said I'd slow down on the posting here, but while playing, I had this happen and I just had to take a screenshot of it. It was cute and nice to see my crew members chilling out, since they're always huddled around the teleporter. I need to fill up my ship with stuff...

I was mildly interested in this game until about three hours ago. Then I read the recent Steam reviews since 1.0 launched and lost any interest I may have once had. The original Starbound sounded cool and dynamic. It had a lot going for it prior to the 1.0 release and had really turned into something I felt I could sink my teeth into. Then it turns out they decided to rip out basically everything interesting and dynamic about the game and turn it into a random, wandering, little impact and low risk title for the official release.

I do not accept having to mod a game just to make it worthwhile. It's why I have so many issues with Bethesda titles since half the mods are just fixing broken things, forgotten features, or poor UI decisions. Mods should not have to make a game what it should have been to begin with to significant degree. So, ya know, maybe if Starbound becomes what it once was, I'll really consider it. In the mean time, I take genuine issue with Chucklefish's approach to reaching what they felt was a stable and feature rich 1.0 release.

It's honestly not going to change for those few who wanted constant tempreture control and the like, most of what those few wanted was a ahrdcore game that ended up screwing over those who wanted to explore but without as much risk, it's why we have different difficulties now.

Hunger is still in the game but in all honesty I actually played the vanilla ea version of the game 3 years ago and it wasn't as in depth and rich with lore and story, it was a very barebones Terraria at the time, it had no story at all, no main plotline, you just went out and collected objects while building whatevertook your fancy, things that you can still do to this day in the current version of the game.

If it never took your fancy 3 years ago, it's not going to now.

Also I find bethesda's engine to be tripe but I really do love mods and mod support, the modding community gives us ideas and content that devs a good chunk of the time hardly manage to think of, it's why most of Fallout 4 is composed of mods that were in Fallout 3 and NV, Bethesda actually took on board what the modding community was making and what we wanted. You may not like mods at all but I find that they ehance the games we play as well as give us more free content, fixes and even get devs endorsing them in their future games.

Reviews in total seems a bit odd to tip your sale for the game with it being 50k positive and 6k negative. Some of the negative reviews have only had a total play time of 2-10 hours for some and the rare cases being 500 hours, likely for those that stopped playing the game for a year or two and then came back.

Finally managed to gather some shots after a session the other night with Raven =P.

Found me an Avian temple, residents were not very welcoming for someone of their kind. Took a nap regardless.

Found myself going deeper into the temple, plenty of Avian guards down below.

Decided to test out my Samus ball form tech, came in quite handy

Finally headed back to the outpost to check out some new tech and hand in a few quests.

The vast majority of the positive reviews are from pre-1.0. Why would I listen to reviews from what the game was prior to the 1.0 release? That is an inherent, glaring flaw with the Early Access system, where reviews just keep on keeping on while a game is developed. The negative reviews are seriously in depth about the issues following 1.0 as well, whereas the average positive Steam review is about six words and a joke, which lets you know there is legitimately something to complain about here if Steam users actually care enough to type out their thoughts in full and then hundreds of people procreed to agree with those thoughts. These aren't all people with two to ten hours either. These scathing reviews are people with hundreds of hours who have been following the game for years.

So yeah, I feel reasonably comfortable trusting these people who trusted the developer enough to follow the game for years, enjoy what it turned into, only to have much of that ripped away because apparently it wasn't deemed functional enough for a 1.0 release.

Granted, I accept that much of the agreement may just be initial backlash, but paying attention to the actual content, the game as it was right up to 1.0 sounded like a treasure. 1.0 sounds like a polished turd trying to appeal to the lowest possible denominator.

I've been checking the reviews since before the last quote, the negatives still aren't vastly outweighing the recent positive ones, same with talk on CF official forums either.

I see you focus on the negative parts of reviews than the positives because I'm checking the positive recent reviews right as I type and I'm seeing a good deal of people writing more than 6 words.

By all means feel comfortable with trusting those reviews, I just hope you do this for every other game because it honestly sounds like you picked this out to dislike greatly due to a few reviews. I've been with the game since it hit early access, I know what has and hasn't changed and it's not really doom and gloom as some make it out to be, though I would guess that if I read a few bad reviews on a game that takes your fancy and went with them, you would argue differently (human nature).

Some of the content that didn't make it didn't entirely make much sense or fit into the play style for some that would otherwise be barred like I had mentioned before. Back in early access I found it insanely frustrating at having to slap down a campfire every few feet or I'd freeze to death on practically every planet, even deep below on a desert biome. Then of course there were those planets where you couldn't dig too deep or you'd burn to death, this is why we have suit upgrades and we still have those to this day to survive elements like radiation, airless moons etc.

If it's a turd for you then it's going to be one forever, I'd suggest in moving on if it doesn't take your fancy.

I wonder if Star Citizen will take your fancy since that is a game that isn't catering to the supposed lowest common denominator.
