Forums - Sales Discussion - July 2016 NPD Thread! Hardware and software up!

Console/handheld software sales were only $156 million, down -13% YOY. In general, those are really weak physical software sales, lowest since the turn of the century.

Although:

PS4 software was down -3% YOY (-46% MOM)

WIU sofware was down +0% YOY (-33% MOM)

XBO software was down -3% YOY (-42% MOM)

So even though the industry was down -13% YOY (-35% MOM), 8th-gen console software largely held steady.

Best-sellers of July 2016:

Call of Duty: Black Ops III was the number-one best physical seller in July 2016 with 194K (including bundle units) and 64K (excluding bundle units)

Minecraft: >175K, top of the physical non-bundle charts

Grand Theft Auto V: 172K, actually up YOY (GTA July 2015: 171K)

Monster Hunter Generations: >165K

Pokemon Ruby + Sapphire (right behind Monster Hunter according to CosmicQueso on NeoGAF)

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Overwatch: 135K

NBA 2K16: 111K

Titles that collapsed in their second month of sale (all below 50K):

1) Mirror's Edge Catalyst (Collapsed at retail from 99K in June to to below 40K in July, high digital shares contribute to its physical decline)

2) Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (significantly below 35K, I thought it would have legs because it launched late in the month but...nope, it's DOA)

3) Kirby: Planet Robobot (Legs were a LOT weaker than expected, and other 3DS catalog outside of Pokemon was also weak).

Sorry guys, DOOM 2016 declined significantly from June. MLB 16 The Show is still holding steady at >60K.

Wow pretty slow month overall though it is July.  Alot of older software selling pretty good (Pokémon, COD, GTA, Minecraft) while MH sold pretty nice I think. Really sucks though that Kirbys legs didn't show. Are the numbers really far below 50K?  I'm hoping that it at least gets close to Triple Deluxe when all is said and done.

Also thanks for all the data as well!

I didn't hear this sort of thing when the PS4 was 100$ cheaper, so  whats the difference now? Most were waiting for the XB1 slim, so if anything it is quite a surprise. Had it just been a regular month with no slim release in site, sales would've been considerably better.

You keep making this point - and you keep missing the point. Several people have already pointed out the answer to you. Go back and read them.

Also the sales wouldn't have been better. They would have been worse. The price cuts and game bundles were because they were old stock. They were getting rid of old stock for the new stock.

If there was no slim release in site - they wouldn't have gotten rid of their old stock. There wouldn't have been discounts and game bundles. And they would not have sold as many.

Exactly. Once the holidays are over and both base systems are $299, XBO sales are going slump once again.  We'll have to see if MS is quick to drop the price to $249, yet again.

GTA V up YOY is insane. what the fuck...

Also, Black Ops III over 11 million lifetime!

So far in 2016 it sold 2.81 million... which is insane.

Aqua, can you post how much sold Advanced Warfare in 2015? It was under Mortal Kombat X in the yearly chart which sold 2.36 million according to Creamsugar, so Black Ops III is already way higher and in only 7 months.

Cheers, Aqua.

Some observations I made when looking at July 2016 physical sales:

No major releases this July either, as compared to 2015. So good to see the 8th gen consoles hold in regards to software sales. No doubt digital will have grown YoY.

Still, with declines in handheld and 7th gen spend it means the retail packaged software market is considerablly smaller than it was during the same period last gen. Not a great number as you point out.

Pokemon effect was strong this month. What will be interesting to watch is how Sun & Moon performs this Holiday.

Good opening for MHG. Wonder if Nintendo will commment on digital sales for the title next week.

Numbers for HW are disappointing this month, other than 3DS. One S should boost sales in August. Not sure on the PS VR impact, but a price cut and a Neo release could certainly re-invigorate PS4 sales this holiday.

AAA Software output this holiday looks to be fairly healthy. That'll certainly drive higher software and hardware sales during the final quarter of the year.

Aqua, Do you have any general thoughts on the future of 8th gen consoles? Especially with Neo and Scorpio being confirmed to release soon. No doubt there is a higher percentage of core gamers owning consoles this gen. So Neo and Scorpio adoption rates will be interesting to watch. As will adoption among more casual users as the price to entry for the base models are lowered and more attractive/higher ouput of software titles are released.

Pokémon moon and Sun will be the second bigger game of the year after CoD, easy, imo.

Pokémon XY sold 3.17 million in 2013... i expect 5 million for moon and Sun. (November+December)

the ps4 neo and ps4 slim rumors are killing ps sells at the moment

Rumors that only 1% of the market hear is killing its sales? Maybe by 5-10k MAX.

source for the percentage you just posted?

I mean, why don't just speak for yourself and the people you know? How can you possibly guess such a number?

I wouldn't rule out Battlefield 1.

Battlefield 4 sold 3.7 million in 2013, at retail. I expect overall sales of Battlefield 1 (retail+digital) be bigger than BF4, not sure about retail only.

But i don't see Battlefield 1 sells 5 million, so i'm go with Pokémon.

Okay....now I can see why Sony still is keeping this BO3 bundle going...it still sells like freaking crazy. This game is insane...
