Thats pretty disappointing and with ppl being less interested in racer, this may be the last entry to hit 5M.

Lol apparently driveclub has no identity. I'll tell you it's identity. It's the spiritual successor to project Gotham racing.

Ok, so your dilluting is talking about interest. Ok. The series dropped a lot in sales, but that in nowhere suggests those were lost sales to Forza. Curiously you compare the Forza that sold 5M to the only GT that dropped in sales around that in trying to push a point that can't be validated. I'll say there is a problem when GT7 fails to get near 10M. Not before. About lack of releases, from PS1 to PS3 there were 2 mainline GTs per gen. While GT3 and GT5 got prologues. Since gen were bigger and the architeture were more complicated it took more time to have a GT on it. I would love they improve the sice of GT team and had deliver GT7 already. But I preffer it stays a 1-2 games per gen then a yearly franchise. What is the point in having cosmetic changes every year? This isn't Fifa for plantel changes. People complain about a lot of games having yearly entries, but then you asks for a yearly GT. Crazy stuff |
Brand strength reflects on sales, yes. That was my point.
I was not sugesting we had a yearly GT game. I did say Forza overdid it. But perhaps every 2 years it would be a good time frame to get the ball rolling. Also, to breathe some new ideas into the franchise.

Perhaps online happened. I do recall many people were happy playing GT5 online instead of going over to GT6. There was as much time between GT3 A-spec and GT4 as between GT5 and GT6, both 3 years apart. GT5 however got a lot of support and was a huge game already. Sure GT6 added 200 more premium cars and as many new tracks as in the release version of Forza 5, yet with so much content already and a big active online community in GT5, why upgrade. |
Those are good points. Perhaps GT6 was too formulaic, but it would also make sense for people to upgrade if theres more content (in the same way people move on to an expansion on an online game).
I do think the PS4 launch had an effect. Perhaps they should have released it on the PS4 aswell. Actually, i thought there was a rumor of that at some point? Drive club was a bad move aswell. It just didnt fit with Sony's IP portfolio. I think that played a part on their sale.
But yeah... it is clear that isn't all there was to it.
Playstation is huge in europe again though, so i do hope GT7 can come out and go back to great numbers. I'd love to be wrong, but i fear GT7 is gonna come out on the last year of the generation at best. Polyphony just needs to be more efficient.

Driveclub's identity is a pretty but average racer. Nothing more than that.

I remember when GT6 released it was near the end of the PS3 live cycle. A LOT of people were expecting it to be remastered for Ps4 since there were tons of remasters at the time. I'm sure many people who bought a PS4 were waiting on a remaster as well, or some sort of alternative. We have GTsports on the way though, so I don't think it'll be as succesful as 5, but I imagine it can hit the 6 million mark over time.

GT6 was released on the PS3 2 months after the PS4 came out.
I will always be a mystery to me why they did not delay it to 2014 or 15 and make it a PS4 game.

I'm certain Forza has generated more revenue than GT since 2013. Because Forza has had a new release every year that sold over a million a year with DLC. Profit though, who knows. |
That's cute of you. Why not make it like GT have generated almost no profit or revenue since 2014. Very arbitrary, but seems to fit your agenda.

I may be crazy because I didn't recognize it on your post.
2 years would make the series release in 30-50% less time than average. Considering Mario and GT profile of once or twice per gen and how much they hold their sales and interest like that I'm not sure it would add value releasing more often, but certainly it would also breath less new ideas and lead to faster fadigue. Forza already fatigued.

Wow, you're like a master at this debate thing.
I obviously picked 2013 because they was the last time we saw a GT game. I would have probably picked 2015 or 2016 if Polyphony could get a game on the market in a reasonable amount of time.
Based on the footage we've of GT Sport, it doesn't look ground breaking for the long development time.

As i said, Forza overdid it, but GT is underdoing it. Say if there was a GT horizon or GT Arcade or GT drive club to hop with the main series, you'd have a new main entry every 4 years and a spin-off every 4 years. I don't think there would be any fatigue and the brand would regain it's exposure.
I do think this is where both GT and Forza have failed. Both have gone too far in the spectrum when theres a nice sweet spot in the middle.
CosmicSex said: So to put a logical spin on the difference in sales, its all about the PS4 really. We all get that. GT Sport will help us establish real world interest in the series. I expect 10 million in sales over 5 years. |
Maybe, maybe not, the racing genre has declined alot in the last few years, pretty much every racing series from last generation (Forza, Need for Speed, F1, MotoGP, Nascar, Dirt) is doing worse now and the new series (DriveClub, Project Cars, The Crew) have not been able to offset those declines.
According to the game database on this site, racing games have sold just under 140 million on PS3+360 while they have sold about 20 million on PS4+XBO.
Obviously its not a 100% fair comparison due to last generation sales essentially being done while PS4/XBO both have a good amount of life left in them but i just cant see the racing genre coming anywhere close to selling another 120 million over the next 5 or so years when they have only sold 20 million in close to 3 years.
So even though GT6 was affected by PS4 launch, there is still a very strong chance that it would have done much worse than GT5 regardless. Overall i would be very surprised if GT Sport or GT7 bring the series back to selling 10+ million.
