Forums - Gaming - Damn you, Gamestop! ("New" gutted copies.)

I think we all know by now that when Gamestop places a copy of a game on the shelf as "new," it's a copy that has been opened with the game disc stored behind the counter somewhere.  I want to be the one who first opens a new game by removing its shrink wrap.  Also, it helps guarantee the case isn't scuffed and the instructions are in near mint condition from who know how many people who have handled it.

I just ordered the elusive Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3: V Generation NEW from Gamestop's website.  I figured they would have had several copies of it new in factory sealed shrinkwrap.  Well, guess what?  It was a GUTTED "NEW" copy.  What gives?  Does Gamestop gut all of their "new" games at the warehouse to prevent employees from stealing them?  Did stores send back their gutted copies to the warehouse, and I happened to be the unlucky one to get that special "new" copy when according to their website there are more new copies in stock?  Was this actually a used game that they are passing off as "new?"  Yeah, I've got to give them a call to see how they'd respond to this what appears to be a scam.

Back in the early 00's, I bought a "new" copy of Teken 4 for PS2. When I got into the parking lot and took the game out of the bag to look at the box art, I noticed it had been shrink wrapped really poorly. It also didn't have the PS seal intact. Immedately, I knew something was off and went back in to tell them that I wanted a different copy. The guy at the counter then gets an attitude and smuggly says "Yeah, it's new. We used that for our kiosks... no one ever bought it". I was like, wtf? That isn't new then! The guy just said basically "sorry" and that they didn't have any other copies so I got a refund and never shopped there again.

Youre not alone.

I think this happened to me once where I bought a 'new' copy of Shin Megami Tensei 4. It was around the time they had the deal going on if you bought Fire Emblem and SMT4, you'd get some free games or something. You just had to register the code of both games to Club Nintendo. The problem was... the code for SMT4 was no where in the box. I looked over it several times, but.. nothing. Either I was very unlucky, or GS took that code out. Damn you GS if true...

My copy of Quantum Break came with an Alan Wake code that doesn't work. I'm not happy but how do I prove it was them? I already had the game on disc but it still sucks that my code didn't work.

My sealed Lolipop Chainsaw had one of the codes not working.  The game was factory sealed (Had the folds) and I got it days early to bout.  So it came from the box to my hand.  Not defending Gamestop, cause they suck, but it probably wasn't them.

At my EB (which is essentially Gamestop) they always have shrinkwrapped copies of new releases behind the counter for the first month. After that is when they do the gutted new copies, which I think makes sense.

When I worked at EB, we gutted two copies day of to put on the wall.  We never gave out the gutted copies unless they were the last two.  We then told the customer that the copy was gutted for display and we shrink wrapped the game after we took it out and everything was intact.  But I think we did open up a new copy of Halo 3 when it came out to play on the demo 360 after we closed after launch.  Not sure what happened to that copy.

When that happens and you get the little seal that you have to get off its because it's the last copy. All the new games are sealed in the back, but they always take one to put on the store floor, and the reason it's opened by employees is because of theft on the floor.

If it bugs you that much, ask if they have a sealed copy, and if they don't and the one on the floor is the last one, make your decision to buy it then or elsewhere.

I work at Gamestop, we only do that if that is the LAST copy of a new game, it's not an incompetence issue.

remember that GameStop is a big business, so you will have your good stores and bad stores. Remember that.

15% off of everything on top of the 20% discount for pro-memebers. Also, free pro-membership, and free games that distributors (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, publishers) give us. Its pretty cool.
