I think I kind of get what the OP is saying, but i have a different way of looking at it.
The way I see it is, humanity has had some problems / issues / concerns that have existed for millennia. Terror under any guise, be it freedom fighters, people motivated by misunderstanding a religion, politics, land, greed etc. Problems surrounding this issue haven't changed and ate usually met with more violence as history shows - we fight violence with violence as an answer to any forum of terrorism.
There is little thought in the above as naturally we humans are hunters, we naturally like to claim territory, new alpha etc. It is us at our most primal and this method has always been a constant.
Now with being PC, using correct terminology, figuring out what is right and wrong, sexuality, even something which some consider as simple as morals, these things are all variables. The goal posts are constantly shifting and so are the rules. Then you add certain sciences to the equation and you have even more changes and variables and nothing can be addressed with what our default solutions / primal instincts. So to ensure we don't just burst out killing each other over a dozen differences e.g.
Muslims vs non Muslims - winner goes on to --->
White vs others - winner goes on to --->
Straight vs non straight - winner goes on to --->
Gender fluid vs non gender fluid - winner goes on to.... And so it goes on, maybe with more than one battle at a time.
I think the idea is to try create some form of rules / regulations that either tries to stop or prolong the inevitable - humanity in its groups and camps to stop try fighting / killing one another.
We are obviously bad at this. We don't know where it's enough or where we have gone to far. Some will like it others won't. Some will like it until it works against them. We aren't easily pleased.
IMO, this is classic cause and affect as a result of things we have been doing to one another over the decades, centuries and millenia.
I'll give one example that I came across. Growing up I had a lot of black friends and some which were half black and half white. In those days we used the term halfcast, everyone did. Then we were told we shouldn't and the term to actually use is mixed race. So everyone used. No one had a problem with either. Then about a decade later I found out its racist to use either term, the term to use is dual heritage. Last year, i met the politician who told me off and I brought it up. We always have been on good terms and I've learnt a lot from her. I asked her a simple question, has any of the terminology helped black or dual heritage people? My brother is gay and when we were kids we would use the word gay as a way of taunting someone. The older generation used it to define happy and now it can be used as any of the 3. At the end of the day many words or terms mean very little until you apply context. Unfortunately, as many terms as we create and as often as we change them, mostly we fail to achieve our goals as the actions and intentions aren't there to support it and in the end the words and terms lose their power.
Sorry for the long post but thought i add my two cents.
