Forums - Sales - Are Japan's economic troubles behind low PS3 and 360 sales?

well when things are good maybe 2 consoles but when you have to cut back maybe one console and the wii is the cheapest and does things differently and software is cheaper!

So you're saying that the Xbox 360, and Playstation 3, may have sold low in Japan, because the Japanese may not be able to afford it, because of a worsening economy? That could be a possible explanation, however, the Wii is also expensive, and it sells well in Japan. The Playstation 3 40 GB is just over $100 more expensive than the Wii, so would that really make much of a difference?

Well at the moment on amazon.co.jp the wii is 23,750 yen, and the PS3 is 37,581 yen, or about a $140 dollar difference.  Not sure how this compares to other retailers in Japan, but it seems a bit more than just over $100.

Also, didn't realize the PSP costs more than the wii, or at least it does on amazon.

The difference is inflated, as US dollars dropped a lot lately

I'd say not yet. PS3 sales are about the same as last year. It could actually get worse yet.

The Japanese are an interesting region, well when Ninja Gaiden 2, both Final Fantasy XIII games are released the numbers for PS3 and XBox 360 will improve.

MGS4 software wise will do much better than some people's expectations on this board. Same with FF XIII.

The economy is bad. The PS3 does use a lot more power than the Wii, and that is a big issue. Energy is expensive there.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

The jobless rate unexpectedly climbed to 3.9 percent, the first increase since September, and job vacancies slid to a two-year low.

The sales of the PS3 are damn low despite a price cut, a good library of games, and several colors available. The handhelds and the Wii, on the other hand, are doing well and these are priced well below the PS3.

4% unemployment is not the end of the world and doesn't discourage the people that have jobs from getting a 2nd system.  Of course, People are getting 2nd systems and then some in Japan.  They likely have a PS2 and DS.  The Wii and PSP are also selling great.  Hell, lots of people have 3 or even 4 systems.  The Japanese seem to think there is more value in the DS, Wii, and PSP then the PS3 and Xbox 360.  That's just the way it seems to be.

The prices are quite cheap in Japan. Try changing it too European or Australian prices and see how they all sell. Games as well. They would be in for quite a shock me thinks.

3.9% unemployment is very low... I believe in Canada we hover around the 6-7%. In the states they use a really stupid way of calculating unemployment which masks the true numbers. So if you see that the states has 3.9% unemployment, all your seeing is people who are still looking for jobs and have been jobless for less then 6 months. In other words, more then likely the unemployment rate in the states is much higher then they report.

Each country calculates their unemployment a different way...
