SO. Given the fact that Nintendo is venturing into making movies: With the Pikmin shorts. Kid Icarus: Uprising shorts. The Star Fox animation that was in SFZ. And all these animations and shorts that have come from them to go along with their plans for movies, just imagine:
A Nintendo Cinematic Universe!
What would it be like? Which IPs would they use? Would it be animated or live-action? How different or true to the video games would they be? Could it be successful with Nintendo themselves in control and in charge of developing these movies? If they can't handle it themselves, who could they partner with to help them out with the movie making process? Will they even bother or do they want to do it?
Given how Nintendo is in a transitional phase and are seriously trying to expand their business and IPs beyond just gaming. I think that if they were truly serious about movies, if they get the right partners and people to help them out, and truly commit to making their iconic IPs work in movie form. Making the best of it, while staying true the foundation and lore of those IPs, that they could do it.
But it would take a lot, and I mean A LOT.
1) The very first, and most important thing in order for it to work, is that NINTENDO THEMSELVES, are the ones in charge of making the films. No handing it off to a different studio and letting them have their creative input, which automatically puts the film at risk of betraying the foundation of the source it's based on and, if gone too far, will completely trash it. (The Last Airbender, Dragonball: Evolution, Super Mario Brothers) It may have just been announced, but I'm convinced that Detective Pikachu will flop, solely because it's being handled by Legendary Pictures rather than the Pokemon Company and Nintendo themselves. (Regardless if they get Danny DeVito to voice Pikachu) Nintendo should be the ones in complete creative control over the films and the plots behind them. A big part why the Marvel Cinematic Universe is such a huge success, both critically and financially, is because Marvel themselves are the ones making, directing, and producing the films while Disney only holds the distributing rights. With the exception of Spider-Man (Sony), Marvel is very much in complete control of what goes on in the MCU. Nintendo MUST be the same with their own franchises.
2) Make them animated. With the exceptions of Metroid, Fire Emblem, and Zelda (maybe), Nintendo's IPs are NOT suited for the live-action film treatment... at all.
Mario? Nope. Pokemon? Nope. Donkey Kong? Nope. Pikmin? Nope. Yoshi? Nope. Kirby? HA. Star Fox? Well, if Bradley Cooper voices Falco it co... I mean, NO!
Bottom line is: It just wouldn't work if they did it all in live-action? It just doesn't match with those IPs, and if they did some of them live-action and some animated, that'd be even worse! What would happen when they eventually reach the Smash Bros. movie and they have to mix in all these different styles of film making into the biggest movie project they have ever made (hypothetically) it'd be a giant mess!
So the best way, in my view, is to make it all animated, preferrably CG, like these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTnNdctBvtQ

Ok, maybe the Zelda tech demo is darker and a little more realistic in tone than the style for the Pikmin shorts and the Smash Bros. trailer, but you get the picture. They were consistent, especially the Smash Bros. trailer, the characters all looked like the belonged in the same universe, and above all, they were absolutely breathtaking!
3) Partner with Disney to help & guide them through the movie making process. In exchange, Disney gets the distributing rights to the films and use of Nintendo's characters in some way they'd like (that isn't amusement parks because of Nintendo's partnership with Universal Studios.) Disney would be the perfect partner/mentor to help Nintendo in the movie making process. Because, movies are one of their top money making forms of revenue and they have excellent track records when it comes to movies, and they've have some form of access to Nintendo's characters.
These are some ways that I think could help a Nintendo Cinematic Universe, if Nintendo ever goes that route with movies, be incredibly successful!
But, alas, this is just one huge dream of mine, and I may not live to see this become a reality, if it ever does.
What about you guys?
