Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo will always make a next/current gen console.

Unless something drastic happens, Nintendo will always make consoles.

I keep hearing the internet arguement that Nintendo should stop making hardware and just concentrate on mobile.  "They" say that the Pokemon Go success is evidence of this.  We've also heard in the past that Nintendo should stop making hardware because their past consoles have not been selling consistantly well since the 8 and 16 bit days.  Well, I disagree.  As long as Nintendo is making money from their handhelds, merchandising and now mobile apps, they can keep making all the home consoles they want as long as they are profitting from them.  I'm sure Nintendo always wants their console to be the best selling on the market.  But as long as they as financially stable, I don't see why they cannot keep making home consoles to make them a little more money and make the rest of us gamers happy.  And I for one am glad of Nintendo's successful mobile endeavor so far.  It helps them financially as well as helps increase mindshare.  So since Nintendo has no future plan to stop making home consoles, I don't see it hapening anytime soon especially now.

I agree with the fact that they will continue to make consoles as long as they make a profit. They've confirmed that the NX will not be sold at a loss, so that settles that.
The thing is, their console focus will remain as long as the consoles don't generate small profit compared to the effort put into them. We've seen how Go and MiiTomo did well despite being very shallow games compared to say, the mainline Pokemon games or Zelda titles.

We all know that Nintendo has a good chance at being successful when it comes to consoles, but it all depends on how well they execute the NX. They have the right things going for them, but it wouldn't be the first time they screw up something so simple

Yeah, I feel the same as well. I feel the day Ninten leave the gaming business is when either it stops being profitable, or people lost interest in games overall.

Those claiming Nintendo would go full mobile are crazy, they would only compete with themselves. It would be like Blizzard released World of Starcraft next to World of Warcraft. You cant release a quality game like a full 3D mario, Epic Metroid adventure, full scale Mario Kart on mobile. Mobile games are just that. Mobile games.

It's a great great compliment, as are the themeparks, merchandise and the definate forthcoming series/movies/cartoons that will come.

They will continue to make consoles and games for consoles as long as they make a profit and as long as there is a market for these games.

I totally agree, you don't see sony stop making TV's because of the Ps4's success. And i think the NX will b a killer sales wise if they release it with a Pokemon game that you can use Pokemon Go characters with.

It's better not to talk in absolutes about possibilities. Nintendo will likely stop making consoles if they're not making as much money as they want to or if there's more profitable options because they are a business first and foremost. Also, nintendo is likely to go 3rd party and mobile if they were gonna just make software. Most of their games wouldn't suit mobile so they wouldn't likely cut out the other consoles and pc from their games.

"Always" is a loaded term.

At some point the age of the dedicated console as a whole will end (that goes for Playstation as well). We're probably not even that far off, I think maybe there's 2 console generations remaining before games become a streaming service like Playstation Now that don't require hardware.

Either that or I think mobile devices like smartphones in 10-12 years time will be able to basically run almost any type of game.

It's very possible if you're in the your mid-20s right now that your future kids will look at the idea of "video game console" as something laughable by the time they are age 10+, the same way you laugh at your parents for having a record player or 8-track to listen to music.

They are a company of gamers. No way in hell are they going mobile only. That's just silly.

Something that I think a lot of people who say "go full mobile" don't take into consideration is that when you have a big hit on mobile (especially something that's social and free to try), it's not like a typical console title that dies down in popularity after a month or two; it's something that makes profit for years.   Like you said,  If they went full mobile, they'd quickly end up  oversaturating the market and cannibalizing their own sales so all they'd need is to churn out enough games to maintain a presence while adjusting that amount depending on how many hits they currently have.  They wouldn't need to go full mobile to accomplish that -- especially with the lower production costs of mobile games.

If the NX sells less than 15 million units Nintendo are out.
