If they support and update this periodically, it can last for a long time. Releasing a new gen of pokemon even few months or so could continue to rekindle interest again and again. Polishing it with updates and new features can keep this game going strong.

Not too long (4-8 weeks), unless they manage to bring in new Pokemon quickly and on a regular basis. But if the current players drop out, new casual players will come in.
