Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo is not the sole contributor to Pokemon GO

Nintendo owns part of Niantic

Pokemon Company also owns part of Niantic I believe, and Nintendo has a 33% direct share of Pok Co. Gamefreak (?) I think it is also has a stake of Pokemon Company and Nintendo AGAIN has a significant stake in that company as well

basically long story short is that Nintendo has a very large stake in the Pokemon Co and most likely also has a large stake in Niantic at this point due to that.

Bear in mind the success of Pokemon GO is arguably mainly due to the fact that it is the first real game to come to mobile that bears the Pokemon brand NOT so much due to the software from Niantic. Its fairly basic at hte moment, and to be far Ingress was not really a big hit.

People just like Pikachu and Charmander and co. its that simple.

It is a big hit for Nintendo.

its a big weird how Nintendo owns significant portions of all of these random smaller companies but when you add up how everything is cut up Nintendo is most likely the majority share owner of them all. Pokemon Co and Gamefreak without a doubt and then Nintendo has some sort of decent stake in Niantic itself

Courtesy of Aquamarine, Nintendo doesn't own anything of Gamefreak, they are wholly independent, but Nintendo does own 35% of Creatures Inc., the third holder of The Pokemon Company shares. This gives Nintendo a total ownership of 43% of The Pokemon Company.

Meanwhile, Nintendo directly owns an estimated 4.44% of Niantic themselves, while The Pokemon Company owns another 4.44%. Since Nintendo owns a big part of TPC, they indirectly own a total of 6.4% of Niantic.

@bolded: the mention of Ingress wasn't to say that it was popular, it was to show that Niantic already did most of the heavy lifting for pokemon GO. The owner of Niantic shouldn't get ALL of the fame when Niantic did a lot of work.

No Niantic, no Pokemon GO. I'm not trying to debate which of the 2 companies is better, I'm trying to give credit to where it is due

The fact is that outside of the industry  99% of the people don't know the names of the people who made the games they play every singe day, how many people do you think would answer Yes when asked "Do you know King/Supercell ?" even if they have Candy Crush or Clash Royale downloaded on their phone ? that's, at a smaller extent is the same on consoles, I could bet 7/10 Pokémon fans don't know what GameFreak is even if the logo appears every time you start the game...

If a good Mario kart/ Bros comes to mobile we will witness more success

I'm sure that Nintendo will eventually buy the rest of Niantic, and make it its main mobile developer. But first they need to solve the problems with Go, specially the servers.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Come join The 2018 Obscure Game Monthly Review Thread.

I found this video, which explains the ownership percentage Nintendo has of all the companies involved and Charmander.

Games like those require fast and precise timing. Something that isn't done well on mobile

So we should just ignore Niantics work and give all the credit to Nintendo?

Likewise, people are familiar with developers. Who doesn't know about bungie, infinity ward, treyarch, and dice? Saying people don't know about what dev made whatever game is a poor excuse to not give credit to developers

Microsoft also used to own Bungie, but to whom do we attribute the success of Halo? Once again, people should give credit to where credit is due

Not trying to defend anyone here but Bungie created Halo. That's a very different thing.

One could argue that Niantic created the mobile line for Pokemon

It's not what I'm saying and to be fair I don't know what Infinity Ward or Treyarch work on, I heard about them but I have no idea whatsoever on what they do/did/will do. Now think about all the people that don't spend time on forums like VGC and you'll understand what I'm saying

People who only play games on cell phones.
