Definitely F-Zero, as far as the gameplay goes. You have to be pretty good to achieve any form of mastery in those games.

Probably something like xenoblade or fatal frame. Yeah metroid and f-zero are pretty"hardcore" but adventure games and racers are pretty accessible and common but the same can't be said for the grind heavy, complicated jrpg or the suicide cult filled ps1 era style survival horror game

I guess it depends on what you define as hardcore, to me it just sounds like a gritty game with spooky bits or a more serious grounded adventure game. So I guess Metroid fits the bill and maybe F-Zero but the whole notion of a hardcore game seems kind of odd to me.

Please stop using that term. Theres no such thing as a hardcore gamer.

Pikmin 3, more difficult and with more depth than a lot of "hardcore" games.

I think somebody who spends a ton of hours mastering a game can be called hardcore. I know somebody who has put over 2000 hours into monster hunter on Wii U. I also know somebody who platinums every PS4 game he plays, those are the kind I class as hardcore. Its not about the genre of game that determines you as hardcore, its the dedication you put into it.

The entire Donkey Kong Country series. I have no idea how DKCR sold so well with such punishing difficulty.
