I remember the logic on vgchartz when we starting talking about the 8th gen Nintendo console; there was a super serious rule about the same manufacturer always winning two times in a row, and the strongest console never wins, so it was a done deal. The Wii sold a lot, so the Wii U would sell as much, just like the PS2 and PS3 did the exact same number.
The 7th and 8th gen have taught us so much! 
Of course they expected the product to be successful, they wouldn't have released it if they knew how badly it would flop.

You would be in flaming territory if you predicted that the Wii U would sell less than 40 million. And VGChartz wasn't in a bubble, everybody saw Nintendo as being the Apple of video games. The Wii and DS were revolutionary and enormously successful and the Wii U looked like another daring and innovative creation from Nintendo. When Nintendo's last two hardware releases had been nothing short of industry-changing, who would have possibly thought that the Wii U would have been anywhere near a flop. I can absolutely see this attitude extending to the people working at Nintendo, as well. Top dogs like Kimishima were probably able to see the wheels coming off the bus a bit earlier, but the average rep at Nintendo probably had no idea that anything would go wrong with the Wii U's launch. |
This thread is amazing. I also remember another thread about when Wii U will outsell Vita and most people were saying it would do it in its first two months, and some others were saying it would outsell it by August 2013 at best. No one even predicted beyond that, and even then these August ones were trolled and called fanboys.
It hasn't outsold it yet, and its 2016.

Eugh, Malstrom, he tucked tail and started writing nostalgia pieces on game music and cherrypick poorly written e-mails to "destroy" without allowing for comments (in case someone added nuances to his rigid opinions).

Gratz for the milestone!
About Malstrom, some of his most active fans here suddenly disappeared (in their "golden age" one of them even reported to Malstrom a post of mine here where I questioned the inescapability of disruption and the correct application of disruption theory in Malstrom articles ), but I could bet that if NX will sell at least decently they could suddenly return and their One True Prophet would start again his old rantings.

Why do some of you think this is unbelievable?
Remember when SONY thought their 600 dollars console is gonna sell 5 million units right out of the gate just because it's called "Playstation"?
The Wii U had questionable design decisions, anemic software, terrible OS and Nintendo actually believed third parties were gonna support it, I wouldn't put believing "the Wii U is gonna be a success" beyond Nintendo's mentality in that disastrous era.
